Based on true story in Peru in 1996, when rebels from the leftist Tupac Amaru movement raided a party at the Japanese ambassador's residence and took hundreds of civilians hostage including American opera star Roxane Coss, and Mr. Hosokawa, a Japanese CEO and her biggest fan. It is a captivating story of strength and fragility, love and imprisonment.

EadieB It was interesting to read about the different relationships that formed between the terrorists and the hostages of different backgrounds and languages. We quickly learn that music is their only common language. The tragic ending was a bit of a surprise and the epilogue seemed like an abrupt change back to normal life. If you are a music lover then I think you would enjoy this award-winning book. 2y
DivineDiana I loved this book, even with that ending. 2y
EadieB @DivineDiana Yes! It definitely was a very good story! 2y

Suet624 I read this ages ago and totally forgot there was a tragic ending. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
EadieB @Suet624 The ending seemed to come and go out of nowhere and didn‘t last long. Happens very suddenly so I can see how you could forget. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 2y
rwmg I thought the ending was a good one and fit the story well, but the epilogue was a disappointment. 2y
EadieB @rwmg I was surprised at the ending as everyone was getting along so well. The epilogue made sense to me as it said “Life goes on!” 2y
rwmg To me, it was because everybody inside was getting on so well, that it had to end with an irruption from outside. The relationship betwen the singer and the translator, again to me, just seemed to come out of nowhere. 2y
EadieB @rwmg Very true but it happened so fast that I didn‘t see it coming! 2y

Just started day 2 of#stayhome24in48 #readathon. I started #BelCanto last night, but I‘m not sure that I‘ll be interested in finishing it today. This book deserves slow reading and I like quick reads for readathons. I‘ll give it an hour or two and decide if I want to read something else. #readingwomenchallenge #popsugarreadingchallenge

britt_brooke @Victoriahoperose I have that one, but haven‘t read it yet. Good to know! 6y
britt_brooke @bio_chem06 Oh good! This gives me hope for her other books, too. 6y
Victoriahoperose If you read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, she actually talks about State of Wonder and Ann Patchett. It‘s really interesting. 6y
britt_brooke @Victoriahoperose Thanks for the tip! 😁 6y
Cathythoughts Oh great. I hope to read this one soon. Mind you , I did love Bel Canto 6y
Reviewsbylola You‘ve made me reconsider Bel Canto‘s spot on my TBR. It‘s been there at least a decade. 😂 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I hated Bel Canto. Hated it. I felt so bad because I love Ann Patchett‘s book shop so much. But, I like this one so far. 6y
Moray_Reads I liked this one much more than Bel Canto 6y
britt_brooke @Moray_Reads I‘m almost finished with it and still enjoying. I agree, much better than Bel Canto. More relatable and engaging. 6y

So....... read and wrote notes on this book for my #penpalsbychance book swap with @Amy-Laura ! Where do I start? It took me a while to process my feelings about this book, the hype is deserved, the writing is slow, gradual and builds to a massive crescendo. I‘m pretty sure I loved the book, or at least I loved how emotive it was. I wish the epilogue had not been added however, did not care for it. This book will stick with me though. #BelCanto

Cosyreader Glad you liked my first choice! Shame I didn‘t 😂 well, I did, for a while... 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Amy-Laura Honestly so conflicted about it, but I like that. I enjoy a book that‘ll leave me mulling it over for days. Great pick! 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Amy-Laura Also.... have you read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets if the Universe? Considering that for next pick? 6y
Cosyreader @Bronte_Chintz I haven‘t and I‘m so happy you want to pick that 🙌! I‘ve read his other one and it was great! 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Amy-Laura Brilliant! I‘ll do that one then! I‘m so looking forward to reading it I‘ve heard so many good things about it. 6y

I remember hearing in a creative writing class 100 yrs ago how a story is only as strong as its antagonist, and truly great heroes and villains tend to be a good bit of both. I so agree! In BC, one of the good guys is an insufferable snob, and the bad guys show up with an endearing sense of humor... so good and bad get all deliciously blurry by the end. This is one of my all-time favorite novels! #belcanto #sympathyforthedevil
