This is a great read! Here is a picture of my Croatian grandparents who lived in Philadelphia in the Croatian section mentioned in the book. My grandfather left Croatia in 1914 and settled in Philadelphia where he had a job painting the Benjamin Franklin bridge. When he had enough money (1920) my grandmother came through Ellis Island. My grandfather probably helped during the flu epidemic as he was an undertaker for his church in Croatia.

Andrew65 @EadieB During the Buddy Read we did some research on the Internet and the figures for death hit home big time, even in the US. Knew about it but didn‘t know how high the death rate was. Worth checking out those discussions. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m surprised my dad never told me about the flu epidemic. He was born in 1921 but he should have heard about it from his dad who must have lived through it. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 I know my grandfather was not easily frightened. He used to paint the ball on the end of flag poles and painting the bridge was no easy task either, I suppose. He died of lead poisoning from the paint when he was in his late 40‘s. (edited) 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB I would Imagine in those days many times he took his life in his hands with working practices at those times. Very sad to hear how he died, so many big mistakes over the years that took people‘s lives too early. 6y
