The last of my #AlgorithmExperiment ⬇️ is the best. A moving meditation on belonging and interracial relationships.

Jing is a tech journalist at a SF-based magazine. She and her white boyfriend relocate to Ithaca for his PhD program. She leaves her job and her Chinese friends behind for a very white area. She becomes less and less sure of who she is as her bf retreats into the lab. She makes a visit to her dad in China to help her reconnect.

Megabooks ⬆️ I bought four books I hadn‘t heard of that Amazon‘s algorithm thought I‘d like. Two were great, one was okay, and one I didn‘t care for. It was a fun way to shake up my reading, but if you want consistent recs, probably ask your local librarian or bookseller! 👍🏻 2y

vivastory Fun experiment! I agree though, nothing beats a recommendation from someone who knows you. Even a little bit, or a serendipitous find while browsing the shelves. 2y

Megabooks @vivastory that is the truth! So many of the best books I‘ve read over the last 5+ years have been gifts or suggestions from litsy friends. Browsing is wonderful, too. 2y

Nervous System: A Novel | Lina Meruane

Frosty cold here (below freezing), but I got an early morning Amazon package! Here are the last three from the #ToBshortlist and #ToBplayin. I‘m reading them all this year, including the play-in, so I have this + two audiobooks left. Let the Christmas reading binge begin! 🎄

Even though I‘m taking it easy, I still want to guess at a #WeeklyForecast.

I‘m enjoying rereading Sedaris with my dad, and Amazon seems to have chosen well with Days of Distraction for my #AlgorithmExperiment.

I‘d love to get to the Allende for #AuthorAMonth, and I splurged with an early gift card and bought the rest of the #ToBshortlist not at my library in print plus Copeland Cane with a credit on audio!

Nina is looking for love, but lest you think this a romance novel, she bounces around shady characters and affairs in Tampa before moving to Brooklyn with her unemployed artist boyfriend. There‘s a theme of violence and coercion from romantic partners, family, and friends. It‘s definitely a dark novel, but I liked it. CW ⬇️

This is one of my #AlgorithmExperiment novels I purchased based on Amazon‘s suggestion. It was pretty okay. One more left!

Megabooks @Cinfhen probably, if I‘m ever bored again. I hit a lull in what I wanted in print fiction in oct/nov so this sated my needs. Now I‘m looking forward to the last few tob books for that plus Scott‘s nywd list in the new year. 2y

Cheat Day: A Novel | Liv Stratman

Darkly funny novel about a woman who will cheat on her husband but not her diet. 🤨

Kit works at a bakery owned by her sister and cousin. She has just started a strict diet with her husband, but when a carpenter does some custom work for the bakery, she finds a release for her pent up feelings that doesn‘t involve food. The characters made believable choices, and I always like that. More contemporary fiction than romance fwiw. ⬇️

The Life of the Mind: A Novel | Christine Smallwood

so-so

First, you have to have a strong stomach for LOTS of talk about womanly bleeding to read this. That may be why this didn‘t make it big OR maybe it‘s because I couldn‘t find the thread of this book. The narrative just didn‘t make sense to me. Maybe it just went over my head. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is one of my #AlgorithmExperiment books from Amazon where I bought books I hadn‘t heard of that it recommended. 3/5 Amazon. Do better!
