Goethe's Faust
Goethe's Faust | Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
12 posts | 20 read | 18 to read
Goethe's masterpiece and perhaps the greatest work in German literature, "Faust" has made the legendary German alchemist one of the central myths of the Western world. Here indeed is a monumental Faust, an audacious man boldly wagering with the devil, Mephistopheles, that no magic, sensuality, experience or knowledge can lead him to a moment he would wish to last forever. Here, in "Faust," "Part 1," the tremendous versatility of Goethe's genius creates some of the most beautiful passages in literature. Here too we experience Goethe's characteristic humor, the excitement and eroticism of the witches' Walpurgis Night, and the moving emotion of Gretchen's tragic fate. This newly revised edition, which offers Peter Salm's wonderfully readable translation as well as the original German on facing pages, brings us "Faust" in a vital, rhythmic American idiom that carefully preserves the grandeur, integrity, and poetic immediacy of Goethe's words.

This month I chose Faust! It was my first pick. My second for the month is The Satanic Verses and since I didn‘t have a book for June, Rushdie made it on the bracket, too.

CSeydel Very nice! 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads What are the directions for this? Thanks!! 😊 2w
GingerAntics What do you mean? You just pick your favourite book each month and add it to your bracket. I have a fiction bracket and a nonfiction bracket. I‘m not sure there are any hard and fast rules. @CSeydel has the black bracket. She‘ll be able to tell you if there are any hand and fast rules. 2w

CSeydel Hi @DrSabrinaMoldenReads ! The bracket is just a fun way to rank the books you read during the year. Each month you add your favorite book to that month‘s space in the bracket. Then the books on adjacent space “compete” - you decide which one you liked better, and it advances to the next round. There are two wild card spaces in round 2, to even up the matches. No rules, no prizes - whatever criteria you want, it‘s your bracket. 2w
CSeydel Here‘s the blank bracket: https://litsy.com/p/TXdoWG1rQWx3 (edited) 2w

Pickpick

This was so enthralling and wonderful to listen to. I highly recommend it. It has the weight and feel and Shakespeare, but the language is far more modern. The translator did an amazing job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry in the English.

Bookwomble And Samuel West and Toby Jones are both such great actors. I bet they were good in their roles! 1mo
GingerAntics @Bookwomble absolutely brilliant! They really brought it to life. I adored every minute of it. 1mo

This has been on my TBR since 2019. I started it after finishing Herod while donating plasma today. I‘m already 77% of the way through. It‘s fast paced. It‘s compelling. It has the feeling of Shakespeare, with far more modern English. This translation has done a marvellous job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry. 100% recommend so far. Would love to do this as a group read at some point. I just wanted to share this brilliance.

GingerAntics Thanks Dr. Quinn for putting this book on my radar! #Goethe #Faust #DrQuinnReadingList #poetry #play #classicliterature 1mo

julesG Had to read and dissect/interpret it in school. Both parts. And, if course, we had to look at other works where a character struck a bargain with the devil. 1mo
GingerAntics @julesG he is a German author, so that makes sense. Yeah, we get Shakespeare and if you were lucky, you MIGHT have been introduced to a little Mark Twain. That‘s about it. Everything else was modern. Then again, this is America. No one would stand for a man striking a bargain with the devil. It might corrupt the children. 🙄 (edited) 1mo

julesG I think we read some Marlow too. Apart from Shakespeare. 1mo
GingerAntics @julesG oooh I read some Marlow in grad school. I‘m trying to remember which ones now… 🤔 🧐 1mo

Another recent acquisition with the Delacroix illustration s. Brainpickings is really bad for running up the credit card statements that way.
