This was so enthralling and wonderful to listen to. I highly recommend it. It has the weight and feel and Shakespeare, but the language is far more modern. The translator did an amazing job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry in the English.

Bookwomble And Samuel West and Toby Jones are both such great actors. I bet they were good in their roles! 5h

This has been on my TBR since 2019. I started it after finishing Herod while donating plasma today. I‘m already 77% of the way through. It‘s fast paced. It‘s compelling. It has the feeling of Shakespeare, with far more modern English. This translation has done a marvellous job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry. 100% recommend so far. Would love to do this as a group read at some point. I just wanted to share this brilliance.

GingerAntics Thanks Dr. Quinn for putting this book on my radar! #Goethe #Faust #DrQuinnReadingList #poetry #play #classicliterature 1w

julesG Had to read and dissect/interpret it in school. Both parts. And, if course, we had to look at other works where a character struck a bargain with the devil. 7d
GingerAntics @julesG he is a German author, so that makes sense. Yeah, we get Shakespeare and if you were lucky, you MIGHT have been introduced to a little Mark Twain. That‘s about it. Everything else was modern. Then again, this is America. No one would stand for a man striking a bargain with the devil. It might corrupt the children. 🙄 (edited) 6d
julesG 🤣🤣 6d
julesG I think we read some Marlow too. Apart from Shakespeare. 6d
GingerAntics @julesG oooh I read some Marlow in grad school. I‘m trying to remember which ones now… 🤔 🧐 6d

More accessible than I expected and with moments of humor that reminded me of Shakespeare. Mephistopheles as a poodle is an image I won‘t soon forget! I knew the story from the opera, but I‘m glad I read the play. #readYourKobo @CBee

Going through the books I rescued from the discard pile at the Book Sorting this week - I saved this one because of the paper and the woodcuts. 1953 edition, printed by the Caxton Club of Chicago, one of 350 copies. The cover's a mess, so it's probably not worth much, but it is gorgeous and I shall keep it.

Leftcoastzen Very Beautiful! I would keep it too!😁 3y
IndoorDame @Aimeesue @Leftcoastzen I would have snagged it too. I adore old books! 3y
LeahBergen Lovely! 3y

Bookwomble Yep, a keeper! 3y
Aimeesue @Leftcoastzen Glad I'm not alone here! 3y
Aimeesue @IndoorDame I love old things - the ones that are still around are evidence that someone cared for them along the way. I love the history there. And they were (typically) so well made! 3y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I do love a pretty book 😍 3y
Aimeesue @Bookwomble I thought so too! I find a lot of good things in the discard pile because they just won't sell at the Book Sale. The discards typically go to library sales or thrift stores, but one of my jobs is to sort discards into trash/recycling (we get a LOT of damaged, stinky, or water warped books) and those to be donated. I can keep whatever good ones I find there. Dangerous for my shelves, but I do love the hunt! 3y

The biggest sale is back , both Saturday & Sunday went to the biggest charity book sale in Az.,the 66th annual VNSA book sale! It was canceled last year because of Covid.Probably the most irritating part is using the blow dryer to get all the stickers off!More posts to follow.

vivastory Nice!! I have been thinking of reading all of the authors on the top row lately lol 3y
SRWCF Thanks for the blow dryer tip. I'd never heard of that!!! 3y
Leftcoastzen @SRWCF a few blasts and peel slow . Doesn‘t always work with matte finish. 3y

Leftcoastzen @vivastory I‘ve read some Lessing & Hesse , I think the Hesse I bought yesterday is better than the one I have .Haven‘t read Banville. 3y
vivastory It's been years since I've read Hesse. He was formative in my late teen years. I have a Picador copy of Steppenwolf that I keep eyeing... 3y
JamieArc When I walked the Camino de Santiago, the hardest thing about it was choosing which *one* book I would take with me. I chose that Hesse book, and it was the perfect companion. 3y
Cathythoughts I love the cover on Fortunes Daughter ... 3y
batsy Interesting older editions 😍 3y
LeahBergen Lucky you! There‘s nothing like a big book sale. 😍 3y

I watched the Globe On Screen recording of this play from a few years ago and just read the original text tonight. There was a lot of physical comedy and spectacle added into the stage performance, though the playtext sets this up with scenes like “haunting” the Pope or parading Helen of Troy. Very enjoyable to watch and read, I wish it was performed more often!

Possible alternative title: Fun Things To Do With The Demon You Sold Your Soul To

If you ever wanted to find out where the term ‘Faustian Bargain‘ comes from, or see an example of good vs evil angels on your shoulders, or if you just like tragic Elizabethan plays, read this classic 😈
