Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers the book, The Catcher in the Rye, that will change the world as he knows it. When Tom discovers his deceased fathers copy of the Salinger classic, he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like its just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his fathers death andoddlyreveal the secret to attracting semihot girls. Being in a band could possibly be the secret to the girl thingbut good luck finding a drummer who can count to four. From the Hardcover edition.

LibrarianRyan I have to tell you a fun story. My first year or so working as a Kids librarian I had to take over a book club from another staff members. I let the kids pick next years books in the spring. When books were picked it was all girls. They picked Sisterhood of the graveling pants. And the boys had to read it. On of the kids at the end when asked his thoughts said “I liked it. I don‘t get it, but I liked it”. I thought that was a weird comment. 👇🏻 5y

LibrarianRyan Until I went looking for a guys book like sisterhood. King dork was one of those reads. It gave me the exact reaction. I finally got what he was talking about. 5y
DarcysMom @LibrarianRyan I am having that liking it, but not totally getting it reaction. 5y
LibrarianRyan @DarcysMom yep. I have the sequel. Just haven‘t read it. I could never find a relatively clean guys book as requested. Parents would have thrown a big fit if we read this. 5y

Tom Henderson and Sam Hellerman are #YoungAmericans united throughout school by the bonds of alphabetical order. In order to stay sane in a crazy world they make up band names which are handily compiled in the back of the book.

There is no band name greater than Ray Bradbury's Love-Camel. #SeptemBowie

vivastory It's almost worth forming a band be just to use that name!🤘🎸💘 🐪 7y
LibrarianRyan I liked this book. I didn't fully understand it. But I liked it. I found the sequel at the Dollar tree and I'm going to give it a try. 7y

Scored this for $4 from a local used bookstore. (The "tear" is actually part of the cover design.) I'd never heard of it, just read the back cover and thought it sounded interesting. I just read some of the reviews on goodreads and now I'm questioning whether this is really the book for me...c'est la vie. I'll certainly give it a shot and hope for the best. I should really refrain from reading reviews until *after* I've read the book.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk It's not for everybody, but I found it very very funny. 7y

Pickpick

There was a rule when I still ran book club that this years group would pick next years titles. The first year I did this the group was all girls. The next, not. That meant 5-6 g boys had to read the Sisterhood o t Trav... last meeting of the book I had a boy tell me "I liked it. I dont get it, but I liked it". I never understood that until I read KD. I liked it but I didn't get it. This was part of my quest to find a SOfTP like book for boys.

LibrarianRyan And in case your wondering, yes KD is like a SotTP for boys, but not age appropriate for the same group. I was never able to find one that the conservative parents would t boycott. 7y

#aQuoteaDay I had some issues with this book and its sequel upon rereading, but the scene when our narrator's band plays the Festival of Lights (renamed because the school felt that "Battle of the Bands" sounded too violent) is one of the funniest things I've read. Ever. My first time through I laughed until I was breathless and remembering it still make me smile.

I own some #funnybooks but nothing on paper has made me laugh as hard as the Battle of the Bands/Festival of Lights scene in King Dork. I remember laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. I literally just turned to that scene and the mental image of Sam Hellerman rolling on the floor with his nose bleed and his bass screaming "Yay-uss!" over and over has me laughing again. #riotgrams

AvidReader25 I've never heard of King Dork, but it looks like we've got a similar sense of book humor, so I'll have to check it out! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Avidreader25 There's a sequel too, with an equally disastrous/hilarious concert. (edited) 7y
