"It is her restless energy and intelligence, fed by the degree of self-will and conceit of which Jane Austen has warned us, and coupled with the boredom of her lonely home life, that drives Emma into busying herself with her neighbors' affairs in a most reprehensible manner." Well, #pemberlittens, is that a good excuse for Emma's ways? Above is a house that might have looked like Hartfield.

rubyslippersreads It reminds me so much of Maple Grove. 😂 3y

This whole paragraph of how people dealt with human waste is interesting, but what really caught my attention was the image of false fronted chests of drawers concealing chamber pots FOR DINING ROOMS. Just let that sink in. #pemberlittens

No wonder Jane never got married! Family planning didn't exist, and women Jane knew had up to 18 children, if their worn-out bodies survived long enough. The good news: condoms existed. The bad news: they were only used by men with prostitutes. #pemberlittens

It's in the Jane Austen's Background folder if the link won't work for you.

Mehso-so

4 ⭐

Will be useful for #PemberLittens but not as good as Lucy Worsley's biography.

Pickpick

This book describes a lot of different themes, like fashion and customs during Jane Austen's lifetime. It was interesting, but I would have enjoyed it more if I had not read another book very similar to this one not long ago.
Emil on the right is not impressed. He only likes books if he can shred them.
