Inside the Dream Palace
Inside the Dream Palace: The Life and Times of New York's Legendary Chelsea Hotel | Sherill Tippins
7 posts | 2 read | 16 to read
The Chelsea Hotel, since its founding by a visionary French architect in 1884, has been an icon of American invention: a cultural dynamo and haven for the counterculture, all in one astonishing building. Sherill Tippins, author of the acclaimed February House, delivers a masterful and endlessly entertaining history of the Chelsea and of the successive generations of artists who have cohabited and created there, among them Thomas Wolfe, Dylan Thomas, Arthur Miller, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, Sam Shepard, Sid Vicious, and Dee Dee Ramone. Now as legendary as the artists it has housed and the countless creative collaborations it has sparked, the Chelsea has always stood as a mystery as well: why and how did this hotel become the largest and longest-lived artists' community in the known world? Inside the Dream Palaceis the intimate and definitive story.

youneverarrived @emilyhaldi have you read it? I‘ve been saving it for when I‘m in the right mood to read it. 6y
youneverarrived @Leftcoastzen oh wow! 😲 I‘m jealous. When did you stay there? 6y
emilyhaldi Yes I did read it! It definitely offers some very interesting information but I found it to be somewhat dry as well. I skimmed some sections and loved others! 6y

After reading Just Kids I had a bit of an obsession with the Hotel Chelsea and all of the #dreams that were born there, especially in the 60's and 70's. So obviously I had to have this book. I remember it being a bit too in-depth regarding the more dry aspects of the building, but still a fascinating story!

@mrozzz Have you read this one yet? Curious to hear what you think!

L_auren Ooooh sounds great 6y
mrozzz I'm pretty sure I have or at least own it and maybe picked it up and put it down because it wasn't the right time for a nonfiction. Let me look at my shelves tonight and flip though. I'm so glad you thought of me! I basically buy any book about NY in the 20th century I can get my hands on. Bought a duplicate recently 🙄 of 6y
mrozzz I just read your description and if I remember correctly and it was this book, then I had the same reaction! 6y

Crystalblu I'll have to check it out! The Chelsea has always been a mythical place to me and Just Kids heightened that! I grabbed one book about a young lady growing up there that was pretty disappointing. 6y
emilyhaldi @Crystalblu I️ know exactly what book you‘re talking about- I️ was so excited when I️ heard the premise! And so disappointed to hear the reviews 😏 6y
Reviewsbylola Does this book have a lot of pictures? 6y
emilyhaldi Yes it does have a good amount of pics! 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Mdargusch The photo just depresses me. 6y

A couple of bargain book pick-ups today. Cross' "Heavier Than Heaven" is great, so this should be a decent companion piece, and a book about the history of the Chelsea Hotel sounds interesting.
