Tom drops his daughter off at college and rather than driving home and facing his marriage, his health, or his career he just keeps driving stopping off to visit old friends on the way. He is not an especially likable character but even with my adamantly disagreeing with almost all of his views there were moments in his thoughts that resonated with me. I really enjoyed reading this but it didn‘t feel very Bookery to me. #bookerlonglist

Hmm, I've not read All Fours and this is hailed as the male equivalent. It's not enticed me to read the latter either.
Just not a hugely likeable character, his portrayal of his family and friends isn't as you'd imagine being. He is indecisive and unreliable. Yes, his wife did the dirty but he's had years to consider this.
Not worthy of the Booker, IMO.

I get the Strout comparisons, from the POV of a monologue that goes off at tangents about random people from the past and present. However, it‘s definitely not the ‘male All Fours‘ - not even remotely. That‘s just a lazy comparison because the protagonist takes off on a road trip without telling anyone, in this case having just dropped his daughter off at college.

I absolutely loved this. I can‘t stop thinking about it. A dad drops his kid off at college then just carries on driving, visiting old friends from his youth on the way. I do love a road trip story and this fits that bill but it is also so much more. It‘s heartfelt and poignant and I now want to read everything this guy has ever written! (This would have made a great #camplitsy pick! 🤦‍♀️)
