Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism | Rachel Maddow
16 posts | 9 read | 3 reading | 13 to read
Rachel Maddow traces the fight to preserve American democracy back to World War II, when a handful of committed public servants and brave private citizens thwarted far-right plotters trying to steer our nation toward an alliance with the Nazis. Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it. It was a sophisticated and shockingly well-funded campaign to undermine democratic institutions, promote antisemitism, and destroy citizens confidence in their elected leaders, with the ultimate goal of overthrowing the U.S. government and installing authoritarian rule. That effort workedtongue and groovealongside an ultra-right paramilitary movement that stockpiled bombs and weapons and trained for mass murder and violent insurrection. At the same time, a handful of extraordinary activists and journalists were tracking the scheme, exposing it even as it was unfolding. In 1941 the U.S. Department of Justice finally made a frontal attack, identifying the key plotters, finding their backers, and prosecuting dozens in federal court. None of it went as planned. While the scheme has been remembered in historyif at allas the work of fringe players, in reality it involved a large number of some of the countrys most influential elected officials. Their interference in law enforcement efforts against the plot is a dark story of the rule of law bending and then breaking under the weight of political intimidation. That failure of the legal system had consequences. The tentacles of that unslain beast have reached forward into our history for decades. But the heroic efforts of the activists, journalists, prosecutors, and regular citizens who sought to expose the insurrectionists also make for a deeply resonant, deeply relevant tale in our own disquieting times.

Halfway through and this is frightening because it‘s happening here again. If you think it‘s not….you are not paying attention. VOTE like your future depends on it….because it does.

This is a well-researched, well-written book about the USA‘s previous flirtations with fascism. Maddow narrates the book in an engaging way, occasionally throwing in a touch of her trademark snark. The only thing I‘d have done differently is I‘d have laid out the two eras side-by-side so that the parallels couldn‘t be missed. But Maddow trusts her audience, so she concentrates on the Hitler era. Continued with Veronica Speedwell on my #audiowalk

This book makes you realize that there‘s very little new under the sun. The US has had large groups of fascist supporters before, the most significant of which was right before WWII with America First and the Christian Front. More Veronica Speedwell on my #audiowalk. I haven‘t decided how I feel about her yet.

4.5⭐️ I will admit I‘m a bit of a fan girl of Rachel‘s, even though I have only read two of her books, but I like how she tells a story. A very timely story and like it is said “history may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Such is the case with this book. The book expands on her podcast Ultra. #2024 #nonfiction #bookstagram #wwii #history #fascism

Disclaimer...I'm not here for politics...so anyone ranting politics I'll delete and move on.
That said , this book examines a time when Nazi propaganda crossed paths with segregationist ideology to create a moment in American history.
If you're a bit of a history buff I suggest giving this a read. It certainly has parallels seen in today's political climate.

Think a book about American right-wing fascism is going to be boring…think again. Rachel Maddow highlights the Nazi propaganda campaign that took place right here in America. Along the way we meet the far-right US citizens and politicians who colluded with the Nazis with the aim of overthrowing the US government and the brave individuals who did everything they could to stop them.

Good thing nothing like that can happen today, right?

dabbe I took multiple meanings from the last word in your post. 😂 And, it's stacked! 3mo

The House of the Vampire arrived in 1907, with a pinch of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, a dash of Swinburne, and a major crush on Oscar Wilde.

I don‘t often read political books, but I‘ve always had an interest in white supremacy and nationalism. This book is about the rise of fascism in the US leading up to WWII. My husband and I are reading it together; I have the ebook and he has the print. It‘s really interesting so far.

Today‘s current read is taking place at the car dealership for an oil change and tire rotation. Don‘t I lead an exciting life? And having finished Oath and Honor, I discovered Spotify also has Rachel Maddow‘s Prequel 🤩🎧

Just wow! While I knew of antisemitism & pro Hitler feelings of Henry Ford, Father Coughlin, & Lindbergh but had no idea how many , some even in power in the U.S. government, were propagandists for Hitler, racism, & Authoritarianism . An eye opening read that has ramifications of life in America today.

Aimeesue This is the thing that stuns me every time I come across it. The US teaches history so poorly that I‘d never heard of it until stumbling across it. https://newspapers.ushmm.org/events/american-nazis-rally-in-new-york-city 5mo

Ophie‘s Ghosts: set in the 1920‘s, Ophie and her mother move from Georgia to Pittsburgh after her father is killed by a white mob. They take jobs as servants in a mansion, where Ophie fully realizes her gift to see and communicate with the dead.
5 stars!!

I‘m starting December with Rachel Maddow‘s Prequel, a book that I‘m sure will be eye opening about history.

120/150 While I didn't plan it this way, this book is a very good companion book to The Bastard Brigade that I read previously. While American agents were fighting to keep nuclear secrets out of Nazi hands, Americans at home were battling home grown fascists who wanted to create an American version of Hitler's Germany. Its chilling how many people in power, Congressmen, Senators, governors and religious leaders, thought America would be better ⬇️

RamsFan1963 under an authoritarian government than a democracy. Of course, it's easy to favor authoritarianism if you know you're the one who's going to be the authority. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 5mo
