The Enchanted Places
The Enchanted Places: A Childhood Memoir | Christopher Milne
5 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Millions of readers throughout the world have grown up with the stories and verses of A. A. Milne; have envied Christopher Robin in his enchanted world; laughed at Pooh - a bear of very little brain - and worried about Piglet and his problems. But what was it like to be the small boy with the long hair, smock and wellington boots? At the age of fifty-four Christopher Milne recalled his early childhood, remembering 'the enchanted places' where he used to play in Sussex. The Hundred Acre Wood, Galleon's Lap and Poohsticks Bridge existed not only in the stories and poems but were part of the real world surrounding the Milne home at Cotchford Farm. With deftness and artistry Milne draws a memorable portrait of his father, and an evocative reconstruction of a happy childhood in London and Sussex. It is a story told with humour and modesty.

Enchanted Places | Christopher Milne

I'm so glad #doublespin got me to finally read this. It's an absolutely fascinating, bittersweet memoir about a childhood that both was and wasn't the magical one A.A. Milne described. Christopher Milne seems to have made some peace with his unusual fame, though I think his skillful writing sometimes conceals more than it reveals.

1. Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) I feel like that would be an awesome place to spend a few days!
2. Hogwarts (Harry Potter) I think it would feel like home & so many wonderful things to explore.
3. Westeros (Game of Thrones) I think this would be a terrible place to be for anyone, although if I could explore it with Tyrion, it might not be as bad, but still not a place I would go!

Liatrek A Tyrion guided tour would be awesome! When he still had all his Lannister money 😊 6y

After watching Goodbye Christopher Robin I wanted to know more. The library had this book available. I finished it this morning. A delightful read and for me an insight into the man and the child that was . Well worth a read , a different time and place but we are left with classic poems and stories that no doubt will delight kids for a very very long time. @MrsMalaprop

CarolynM I loved Goodbye Christopher Robin, I have always found it hard knowing how Christopher Milne felt about those lovely stories. I sympathise with him but I wouldn't be without them. This book sounds really interesting. 6y
Jeg @CarolynM I think this books gave me a better understanding of how Christopher felt about it all. I came away from the movie thinking he had a very hard time and that he was more than a bit resentful. This changed my mind or a least put it in perspective. He has 2 more books that follow on. I‘ll read them when I find them. I‘m also going to see if I can find AAs autobiography. There are several biographies about him will look those out too. 6y

We just purchased my *almost* dream reading furniture and when I came home the other day, my spouse surprised me by setting up a reading nook in our bedroom, complete with my favorite quilt, made by a good friend, customized to reflect my love of books (the patterns are stacks of books). I may get through The Count of Monte Cristo much faster than I anticipated now 😊📚😍
