This well researched & written historical fiction with a slow burn romance gets a Pick rating. Set against the backdrop of South Africa's diamond mines, it's the experiences of a young woman recently migrated from England. It is entertaining & engaging, in parts genuinely moving (the conditions for the natives in the mines, the smallpox victims) & has interesting things to say about the exploitation of SA by white colonialists. However...cont. ⬇️

readingjedi Cont. from above ... do not get me started on the main character. Bone-headed and annoying doesn't even begin to describe this selfish, blinkered idiot. OK, yes I started, but seriously, she was awful. And I know the author intended her this way but I think she overdid it slightly as she (the MC) is impossible to like or sympathise with. She kinda deserved everything she got ... except the happy ending!!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes it's like authors create unlikable characters so that they can show how the character grows/matures throughout the story... except they forget to do the part where the characters grows and matures! 4y

This follows Frances, penniless after the death of her father and forced to emigrate to the diamond mines of South Africa to marry an impoverished doctor. Here she must chose between two men; one poor but noble, one not. I disliked Frances intensely and can‘t decide whether that was intentional. This was solid, enjoyable historical fiction but as well as my thoughts on Frances I felt much of what happened was predictable.

I haven't read this one yet, but I've heard it's good! Set in South Africa. I've never been there but I'm assuming it's warmer than Minnesota in December. 😉

Bus reading: an early manuscript of Jennifer McVeigh's next novel, out in the fall from Putnam. It's too early to tag the title, so I'll tag McVeigh's last novel, THE FEVER TREE, which I loved! Excited for this one!
