Loved this novella! It starts immediately this amazing partnership that Ester builds w/ her roc, & escalated into this fantastically described hunts. But there‘s also a very human thread of obsession in the face of loss & what Ester is prepared to sacrifice🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The suitcase full of clothes, toiletries, and other necessities has been packed for over a week.

But of course, the most important packing hasn‘t been finished yet. What books do I take? 😂

Chose this as a short audiobook to listen to with my teenagers on a road trip. We all liked it! It is a novella, but I would‘ve been into a full length novel as well- there was a lot here that could‘ve been more deeply explored

I think this novella would've benefitted from being a full length novel. I was really interested in the worldvuilding, especially the elements of Zoroastrianism, but it never felt like we got to get deep enough into the story and how the ruhkers train before being paired with their rocs. An interesting read but I wanted more.

Loved. It. Lee‘s story about a young woman who becomes a ruhker, someone who trains & works with rocs to hunt manticores, is gripping, in a quiet persistent way, from the first page. The world is intriguing & well developed, Ester & Darius are fabulous characters, & the story of perseverance & hope, letting things go, freedom, and friendship is an engaging one that‘s hard to put down. I really enjoyed this one—yay for the awesome sale shelf find!

Short diverting fantasy read. The author established a full world in a few pages. Fun read. 2.5 🌟

This could have been so much longer and more detailed and I‘d have been fine with that.

Way too short. I would have liked to spend more time in this world.

Pippin and I are enjoying a quiet afternoon with Fonda Lee's upcoming fantasy about a girl who becomes a rukher, flying a legendary roc to protect the kingdom from the manticores that killed her family. It's a tiny book (only 150 pages), but it packs a huge punch.
