There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness
There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness: And Other Thoughts on Physics, Philosophy and the World | Carlo Rovelli
5 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
A delightful intellectual feast from the bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time One of the worlds most prominent physicists and fearless free spirit, Carlo Rovelli is also a masterful storyteller. His bestselling books have introduced millions of readers to the wonders of modern physics and his singular perspective on the cosmos. This new collection of essays reveals a curious intellect always on the move. Rovelli invites us on an accessible and enlightening voyage through science, literature, philosophy, and politics. Written with his usual clarity and wit, this journey ranges widely across time and space: from Newton's alchemy to Einstein's mistakes, from Nabokovs lepidopterology to Dantes cosmology, from mind-altering psychedelic substances to the meaning of atheism, from the future of physics to the power of uncertainty. Charming, pithy, and elegant, this book is the perfect gateway to the universe of one of the most influential minds of our age.

Sometimes all you need is someone like Uncle Carlo to hold your hand via these crônicas & reintroduce you to the wonder & strangeness of the world. These are short, brief pieces that reflect his belief in the marriage of science & arts, on the wholeness of disciplines in order to marvel at the complexity of life. I read a couple every morning to start my day & it was the perfect fit for #TheWorldIsMyOyster for #TitlesAndTunes @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

Apologies if someone has already picked this song or if my choice is too obvious, but it's the most beautiful song to me about being at home in the world/making the world your oyster (in a different sense). Plus, it will always remind me of my dad ❤️ Carlo Rovelli is an Italian physicist I've been meaning to read (his books on time, & physics for a general audience) but I thought I'll start with this for #theworldismyoyster theme! #TitlesAndTunes

I loved this mental romp into theoretical physics, philosophy, history, sociology, and the scientific process. The essays in this collection range from comparing octopuses to extraterrestrials (for studying of the evolution of consciousness), our knowledge of black holes in relation to the nature of time, the toxicity of rising nationalism, and insights gained while using LSD. It is not an easy read, but nonetheless it was fun and rewarding.

Rovelli mixes physics, astronomy, Einstein, Hawking, philosophy, poetry, and international science pioneers in a charming collection of essays. Not technical reading as the focus is the beauty of learning and curiosity.
