From the author's Q&A: "My ultimate dream is that Melissa becomes historical fiction. I want to live in a world where people read this book and wonder why Melissa‘s transness is such a big deal."

I cried reading this book today. Stories like this are so important for kids to read, whether they are queer or not. To feel understood and to learn acceptance, so maybe the world can eventually become a more tolerant space for all ?️‍⚧️

1. I don't have a particular favorite author. My favorite genre is fantasy. When I was in middle school I read a lot of Tamora Pierce

2. My friends and I would hang out at the neighborhood playground on weekends

3. There was a specific time period when shorts were allowed to be worn. After a certain day in the fall they weren't allowed again until a certain day in the spring

For Banned Books Week, I knew I wanted to read this frequently challenged book about a young transgirl and I‘m so glad I did—it‘s so full of heart and dignity and written with such loving and beautiful detail. You will want to give Melissa a big hug every time she‘s brave and celebrate with her every time she gets to be the girl she truly is! This is a must-read and warmly narrated by Jamie Clayton on audiobook.
