A Ballad of Love and Glory
A Ballad of Love and Glory: A Novel | Reyna Grande
20 posts | 7 read | 14 to read
A Long Petal of the Sea meets Cold Mountain in this sweeping historical saga following a Mexican army nurse and an Irish soldier who must fight, at first for their survival and then for their love, amidst the atrocity of the Mexican-American Warfrom the author of the timely and riveting (People) Across a Hundred Mountains and The Distance Between Us. The life of Ximena, a gifted Mexican healer, is tragically upended in the spring of 1846 when the United States Army marches south to the Ro Grande, provoking an unjust war with Mxico. After her husband is killed by Texas Rangers, Ximena leaves her beloved ranch to serve her countrys cause, traveling as an army nurse from battlefield to battlefield. Meanwhile, John Riley, an Irish immigrant in the US Army, has grown disillusioned by the brutal treatment of his fellow Irishmen at the hands of nativist officers. Risking death for desertion, he swims across the Ro Grande to join the Mexican Army and lead the Saint Patricks Battalion, a company of American deserters determined to defend Mxico against the northern invaders. As the war intensifies, Ximena and John are drawn inexorably to each other but face an uncertain future together. Reyna Grandes spellbinding tale, peopled by bold unforgettable characters and inspired by actual events, explores the conflicting meanings of courage, love and loyalty, while illuminating an unsung moment in history that continues to impact the US-Mxico border to this day.

I posted 4 spoiler questions for November‘s #OverBookedClub read. You can find them in the book‘s page, my page, or the club tag. I‘ve only seen 1 review so im not sure if others have t had a chance to finish. This book seems right up my alley and I want to love it but I was getting bogged down in some of the battles. I‘m about 50% through and hope to finish.

TheBookHippie I‘m almost done!!! Terrible at posting 😅🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Chrissyreadit I did not read it even though it seems like a book I would enjoy 1y
julieclair I am loving this book so far! I'm only about half way done. November was the worst reading month I've had all year... so little time for reading... I'm behind in all my buddy reads. 😕 1y

mrp27 I still want to read this one but November was so busy I couldn‘t squeeze it in. 1y
sblbooks Thanks! I really enjoyed this one. I understand why it's hard to read though, there are parts that are so brutal. I hope you guys will finish up, or read it someday. It's definitely an interesting topic that I would like to read more about. @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @julieclair @mrp27 @megnews 1y

sblbooks There are so many losses in this novel. 😞 Their spouses, and all the men of Saint Patrick's battalion had the biggest impact on the story. 1y

sblbooks As I mentioned in the previous question, I believe the reason the Irish felt a kinship to the Mexican people was because they shared the same religious beliefs. 1y
megnews @sblbooks I agree with that. Could it also be because both groups were looked down on, oppressed, or fighting a greater power to hold on to their land? 1y
sblbooks @megnews for sure. 1y

sblbooks The Irish and the Mexicans were both Catholic nations. At the time Ireland wanted their freedom from England. While Mexico was trying to fight for the land they possessed and keep the US from annexing anymore of their Homeland. 1y

This month's #OverbookedClub pick is excellent. I will now be doing a deep dive on the Mexican-American War. I don't think I've read any other novels set during this time. Thanks for choosing this one @megnews When is the discussion?

megnews I am struggling with this one. I enjoy parts but get bogged down in the description of battles. I tried on audio and still the same. I hope to finish but at this point it‘s the first time I haven‘t finished an #overbookedclub book on time. I‘ll post questions tomorrow. 1y
megnews I‘m really glad you enjoyed it. I love when a book takes me down a research and reading rabbit hole. I thought that would be the case here for@me as I know nothing about this war. 1y
sblbooks @megnews there's no rush. There are parts that were extremely difficult to read. I remember we studied Manifest Destiny in school. I also remember watching North and South and the Mexican-American War was in that miniseries as well. Even so, I didn't know many details. 1y

I finally finished this! I used up quite a bit of Libby karma renewing it more than once but not because of the quality of writing. The story is sad and brutal and covers a rather forgotten episode in US history.

The #20in4 readathon turned out to be a bust. I did finish Renovated to Death, but otherwise I just wasn‘t especially motivated. I‘m diving back into Ballad now.

AmyG Same here. I had trouble concentrating. (edited) 2y

This is a slow burning novel set during the US-Mexican War in the 1840s, a war that is quite honestly not really discussed in US school history texts (other than it‘s the war before the Civil War). I had no clue about the Irish battalion that fought on the side of Mexico! I need to better educate myself!

This story follows an Irishman and a Mexican woman navigating the war and finding each other. It‘s a love story but also a war story ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle …that highlights the racism and prejudice faced in the US military. There are some graphic scenes in the novel, so not for the faint of heart. There were sections that felt overly drawn out, but I had to know what happened to the characters (I did know how the war ended from my limited knowledge). If you want to see a perspective of war from someone who is not the victor, this is a must read. 2y

Set in Mexico during the Mexican American War. John Riley an Irish soldier fighting on behalf of the Yankees abandons them to fight for Mexico. He is hoping to help Mexico for the freedom they desire that he was unable to get in Ireland. While he is there he falls in love with Ximena who is recently widowed. Their love is epic until he is taken prisoner and Ximena fights to save his life.

This book is an example of why I read historical fiction. I knew nothing about the American invasion of Mexico of 1846 to 1848 and this book educated as well as entertained me. I found myself Googling the real John Riley and was surprised at how much of the story was based on actual events. The story is complete with a romance (albeit a fictional one) and the violence one would expect from a war story. I gave it 4/5 stars.
