The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven
The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven | Nathaniel Ian Miller

A harshly beautiful debut that chronicles one man's solitary sojourn in an uninhabited fjord in the Arctic circle, after a mining accident leaves him disfigured, and despite everything, his deepened connection to those who love him In the early 20th century, with the onset of the first World War, Sven Ormson leaves a life of unfulfilled restlessness in Stockholm to pursue a mining position in the bitter, dark cold of northern Scandinavia. Yet within months, his life as a miner ends abruptly after a tunnel collapse leaves his face and body disfigured. Seeking only to escape from the sympathetic and disgusted eyes of all who look at him, Sven flees even further north, building a small hut on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, one of the most remote inhabitable areas in the Arctic circle. So begins his life of true isolation--a life constantly at war with hunger and the elements, forcing him to endure some of the most brutal conditions in which a human can survive. Only with the teachings of an intrepid Finnish trapper, Taipo, and the emotional companionship of MacIntyre, a Scottish geologist with a proclivity for good whiskey, is Sven able to survive his first winter. But as the years begin to pass in isolation, the arrival of long-forgotten relative will alter the lonely existence to which he has consigned himself and offer Sven the chance for something more. Written with a rare candor and harnessing breathtaking descriptions of the far north, The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven shows us that isolation can bring us only so far in healing and that the most powerful relationships transcend circumstance. Miller's rapturous debut emerges as a masterpiece of empathy and platonic love, even in the most inhospitable conditions in the farthest reaches of the inhabitable world.

#12Booksof2022 🎶 On the ninth day of Christmas my true love read to me, a solitary Swede 🎶

For my twelve, I‘m highlighting my favorite audiobooks of the year. Great books that were all the more enjoyable thanks to outstanding narration &/or production.

Andrew65 Sounds interesting. 1y

A debut novel by a Vermonter. Miller‘s reading at a festival grabbed me. Based loosely on a man from the early 1900‘s who became badly disfigured in a mining accident. He goes to live a solitary life in the Arctic Circle. He gets by over the years through the kindness of several individuals who teach him a variety of lessons. Wonderfully written, the characters are ones we grow to care deeply for.

AnnR Nice review! I'm not a big memoir reader but this one sounds tempting. 1y
Suet624 @Ann_Reads thank you. It‘s really more of a novel than a memoir. It‘s a really satisfying story. 1y
Tamra It definitely has narrative drive! 1y

Not much time to read once the US World Cup game starts, but I‘m tucked up on the couch under a blanket reading about the Arctic Circle and getting excited for the game.

BarbaraBB Are you watching the World Cup? Love that! US are playing well!! 1y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I am! Due to having some surgery I actually get to stay home to watch. 😀 1y
BarbaraBB You‘re forced to relax! I hope you can enjoy it and surgery went well 💚🍀 1y

Another Vermonter, Miller was a finalist for the Vermont Book Award and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. This book, part historic/part novel, sounded fascinating. Of course they had sold out of his book once I tried to grab a copy. Seated beside him was Vermonter Janice Obuchowski who wrote The Woods (out in November. Anthony Marra, who awarded her a prize for her short fiction, called her book “A genuine work of art.”

jlhammar Wow, seems like an amazing event! I recently listened to the audiobook of Stockholm Sven and really enjoyed it. 2y
Suet624 @jlhammar that‘s so good to hear. He was a very unassuming guy, almost apologetic about being there (for some reason). I really want to read this one. 2y

Good audiobook. Inspired by a real man who, in the early 1900s, left his life in Stockholm to live in the Arctic. His face is disfigured in a mining accident and thereafter builds a hut and lives mostly in isolation (as a trapper) for the rest of his life. The hut still stands, little else is known.

The fictionalized Sven is a great character. He loves books, loves his dog. A story full of heart and adventure as well as quiet and solitude.

Megabooks You have me intrigued. #stacked 2y

Narrow pick. The setting is unusual and characters strong, but it does not have a narrative drive so the storyline meanders. I suppose because it‘s written memoir style that can be expected.

I‘ve been bailing left and right on audiobooks! I nearly didn‘t finish this one. 😬

This charming novel is very much a character-driven story. I chose it because i'm on a bit of a Nordic reading kick. It definitely delivers. Lots of history, arctic survival facts, and a peek into a world that is rarely seen. I would highly recommend this book to fans of Nordic literature, Eowyn Ivey and dogs.

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did, feeling like maybe I wasn‘t the right audience for a story about a man living alone in the Arctic. But this book is all about human connection and it‘s lovely and heartbreaking and the characters are ones I will not quickly forget. Out in October.
