The novel takes place in Cornwall in 1947 at a coastal hotel. From the opening, the narrator reveals that the hotel will soon fall of a cliff, killing some of its guests. The suspense lies in learning who survives and who doesn‘t.
An interesting premise and a funny stream of characters but there are so many that I couldn‘t really keep track because I had the audiobook.
Maybe I try again in print one day…

I loved this story of characters who personify each of the seven deadly vices, set in a Cornwall resort in 1947. Of course, highly unlikeable characters abound. 😆 You learn at the beginning that a landslide has occurred, & then go back in time for the week leading up to this event. Excellent exploration of human nature. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished a little bit ago. This is an older book, but interesting to see it in context of how it was written, and set, after the Second World War and its impact on England. It was interesting exploration of the impact of the war in terms of rations/economy, disruption to class structure, and perceptions of those who “skipped” the war. At times the book dragged a bit but I enjoyed the ending with its lack of resolution despite the dramatic events.

There‘s a blurb from Anita Brookner included in the inside flap: “Not only a romantic but an anarchist.” Alright, Ms. Brookner, you‘ve intrigued me. 👀

I didn‘t know what to expect of this book. I thought was more summery funny theme. But it was more intense. It has some funny parts. These persons spent few summer days at the Pendizack Manor Hotel which collapsed. Some of these guests died others survived. The book is about these guests personalities, lives during their visit. In those dialogues and self talking the author gives us a perspective of that era, with criticism in various aspects⬇️

I really enjoyed this story, set in Cornwall in 1947. You know how it ends but not who gets killed. Some of the characters are quite nasty and horrible.

What a fun suspenseful ride with some dreadful people! It‘s not a spoiler to say there is a pummeling.

A little more than halfway thru and there are some ghastly characters! 😳

Enjoying a moment over breakfast before I have to put on my chauffeur hat. Enjoying the tagged book so far! 😄

These two I started yesterday, I have managed to read more than normal this past as I had Covid. Now feeling much better and will go back to work in a few days.

Day 14 #tbrpile

There's not a ton of stuff I missed about the office, whilst working from home. But lunch from the halal cart + reading was certainly one of them 🙂

Well this is really quite something. I liked it a lot. I deliberately skipped the introduction before I read it so it wouldn‘t spoil anything for me and it really repaid me. I need to go and have a look at what the blurb says before I write any more so I don‘t give too much away. A complete page-turner.
