The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County | Tiffany Baker
17 posts | 18 read | 24 to read
When Truly Plaice's mother was pregnant, the town of Aberdeen joined together in betting how recordbreakingly huge the baby boy would ultimately be. The girl who proved to be Truly paid the price of her enormity; her father blamed her for her mother's death in childbirth, and was totally ill equipped to raise either this giant child or her polar opposite sister Serena Jane, the epitome of femine perfection. When he, too, relinquished his increasingly tenuous grip on life, Truly and Serena Jane are separated--Serena Jane to live a life of privilege as the future May Queen and Truly to live on the outskirts of town on the farm of the town sadsack, the subject of constant abuse and humiliation at the hands of her peers. Serena Jane's beauty proves to be her greatest blessing and her biggest curse, for it makes her the obsession of classmate Bob Bob Morgan, the youngest in a line of Robert Morgans who have been doctors in Aberdeen for generations. Though they have long been the pillars of the community, the earliest Robert Morgan married the town witch, Tabitha Dyerson, and the location of her fabled shadow book--containing mysterious secrets for healing and darker powers--has been the subject of town gossip ever since. Bob Bob Morgan, one of Truly's biggest tormentors, does the unthinkable to claim the prize of Serena Jane, and changes the destiny of all Aberdeen from there on. When Serena Jane flees town and a loveless marriage to Bob Bob, it is Truly who must become the woman of a house that she did not choose and mother to her eight-year-old nephew Bobbie. Truly's brother-in-law is relentless and brutal; he criticizes her physique and the limitations of her health as a result, and degrades her more than any one human could bear. It is only when Truly finds her calling--the ability to heal illness with herbs and naturopathic techniques--hidden within the folds of Robert Morgan's family quilt, that she begins to regain control over her life and herself. Unearthed family secrets, however, will lead to the kind of betrayal that eventually break the Morgan family apart forever, but Truly's reckoning with her own demons allows for both an uprooting of Aberdeen County, and the possibility of love in unexpected places.

Mehso-so

Started off well: a woman with a hormonal disorder encounters, from birth, the discomfitures of being too big in a town too small and narrow-minded. She turns to a forgotten quilt, sewn by a distant ancestor accused of “witchy” healing powers, to change things.

So often, we believe we are alone in the privacy of our fantasies, but that is a delusion as well-and perhaps the most dangerous kind. For in letting ourselves forget about the common threads of our innermost wishes, we erode our foundations and lose the keystone of our souls.

I quite enjoyed this story of a woman on the outskirts (and yet not) of her society. The writing is gorgeous. And even if the ending was a bit rushed and disjointed, I‘m very glad I read this one.

I enjoyed this book! This is Truly Plaice‘s story. She‘s a giant, both in body and spirit. Almost every character is flawed, some are downright awful, yet somehow most remain likable and relatable. Sometimes, I wanted to shake Truly, mostly I just wanted to hug her. Battling bullies, mistreatment and feeling like she‘s not worthy of love, Truly works her way into your system along with the misfit characters of this town. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

In my favorite reading spot. I find it comfortably warm in the shade. My family thinks I‘m crazy. 😂😎 The heat is making me sleepy.

I am making good time progress for #jubilantjuly. I‘ve read for a total of 12 hrs and 27 mins. I will probably pass my goal of 15 hours. I‘m not sure if I will finish this book before Monday, though. My Bookly app says it‘s going to take me about 6 more hours to finish, reading at my current rate. ❤️📚

My favorite reading spot, on the porch, is in full sun at the moment. I lasted about 10 minutes. It‘s HOT!☀️🔥 My weather app says it‘s currently 81* with a real feel of 93*, at 10:20am. Headed for a high of 92* with a real feel of 104*. Guess I‘ll be reading inside, at least until my reading spot is in the shade. 😎❤️📚

Picking up this one for #jubilantjuly. This has been on my TBR forever! I tried to get my book club to read it ages ago, but I think one of them had already read it, and that disqualifies a book. Goal is to finish this for the Readathon. ❤️📚 @Andrew65

Andrew65 This sounds interesting, good luck with finishing it. 😊👍 4y

Isn‘t this cover gorgeous? I don‘t know, the more I look at it, the more I adore it. Plus the cover has this beautiful texture - it‘s just striking me as magical right now. This author has some phenomenal word play in this one... here‘s an example:

“The word drifted from his mouth, a disappointment reluctant to leave the warm nest of his body and become manifest.”

Even her descriptions of the characters I hate are delicious.

Zelma Everything you just wrote makes me want to read this. Added! 7y

I‘ve had 3 books (Oryx and Crake, The King‘s Mistress, and this one) for such a long time and I am DETERMINED to be able to hand them back to my friend the next time I see her. After this I‘ve got I think 3-4 more borrowed books waiting to be read and given back with apology to their owners.

This story reads a little like The Help and has a magical quality that reminds me of Big Fish (alas, haven‘t read that one but did love the movie)!

#TBRtemptation post 2! I like this cover. We follow the travails of one Truly Plaice, giant. Her birth, childhood, & adulthood in Aberdeen County are fraught with rambunctious negativity from all & resilience of spirit from within. From her being blamed for her mother's death at birth to watching her beautiful sister despair in a loveless marriage within the town's upstanding Morgan family, she finds her gift to heal. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

It took me awhile to get into this book, as it's a little slow to start, but once I did it was wonderful. Truly was a "larger" than life (no pun intended) protagonist that I fell in love with her strength.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I liked this one too! I just stumbled on it accidentally and found it charming. It had more depth than I expected. 8y
