The Quantum Thief
The Quantum Thief | Hannu Rajaniemi
16 posts | 21 read | 27 to read
Jean le Flambeur is a post-human criminal, mind burglar, confidence artist, and trickster. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his exploits are known throughout the Heterarchy- from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to stealing rare Earth antiques from the aristocrats of Mars. Now he's confined inside the Dilemma Prison, where every day he has to get up and kill himself before his other self can kill him. Rescued by the mysterious Mieli and her flirtatious spacecraft, Jean is taken to the Oubliette, the Moving City of Mars, where time is currency, memories are treasures, and a moon-turnedsingularity lights the night. What Mieli offers is the chance to win back his freedom and the powers of his old self-in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed. As Jean undertakes a series of capers on behalf of Mieli and her mysterious masters, elsewhere in the Oubliette investigator Isidore Beautrelet is called in to investigate the murder of a chocolatier, and finds himself on the trail of an arch-criminal, a man named le Flambeur.... The Quantum Thief is a crazy joyride through the solar system several centuries hence, a world of marching cities, ubiquitous public-key encryption, people communicating by sharing memories, and a race of hyper-advanced humans who originated as MMORPG guild members. But for all its wonders, it is also a story powered by very human motives of betrayal, revenge, and jealousy. It is a stunning debut. The Quantum Thief is a Kirkus Reviews Best of 2011 Science Fiction & Fantasy title. One of Library Journal's Best SF/Fantasy Books of 2011

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 227 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram

ReadingEnvy I really liked this one but it is BRAINY and then I couldn‘t get into the sequel. 3y

📘Qui a peur de la mort? by Nnedi Okorafor or tagged
✒️ I have no author with a Q in my library, neither in paper or ebook. None. I've read fanfic by QuixoticFemme, though.
🎥 Que la fête commence! (1975)
🥧 Quiche. Mushroom and cheese quiche, especially. Or any egg pie, really.

Excellent sci-fi, especially considering it was the author's debut. Mind-boggling worldbuilding, intricate plot, questions of identity and personhood in a world of near immortality where your consciousness can be transferred to a new body. I suspect on a reread I will catch many things I missed this time around. Though the quantum stuff might always be over my head (he credits a math think tank in the acknowledgements)...

llwheeler #sfftbrchallenge 1/50! Set in the future. And 5th book for #13books13weeks 6y
readordierachel Good to hear! I have a digital copy of this. 6y
llwheeler @ReadOrDieRachel Hope you like it! 6y
DuckOfDoom I lied this one also, I think I need to read the sequels (and then a reread) to really get what's going on sometimes 6y
llwheeler @DuckOfDoom Yeah I definitely would like to read the sequels. I think part of it is he packs SO much into the book that there's not a lot of space for explanations, you're kinda kept on your feet the whole time (not a bad thing). So I'm guessing a lot of things would become more clear in sequels. 6y

This book was amazing. It isn‘t for the faint of heart, since it throws you into the world with little or no explanation of terms, tech, or events, expecting you to figure things out as you go. I‘ve read other books like this, though, and I actually enjoy the challenge. It‘s also a very satisfying story, even if it is setting up the story for books 2 & 3. Loved it! 💙

This was far more entertaining than I thought - my father did not like it as much because he had trouble distinguishing virtual reality and reality. It is a bit confusing at first, but I got the hang of it.
The worldbuilding is extremely complex and not really explained, so I stumbled upon a lot of things, but the story developed into a grand finale that leaves me wanting more of this - and there is (2 more books) 😄

ReadingEnvy I loved this. The author is so smart! 7y

Since my #TBRBingo version is slightly different I crafted a custom bingo card - If I finished a book in a series I can remove the post-it and replace it with the next book - Until the series is finished and I can cross it out!

I heard an interview of Rajaniemi on Geek's Guide to the Galaxy and was a bit intimidated because he has a Ph.D. in string theory(!). I'm going to give this a shot anyway. I need something to fill the void that Julia Baird's Victoria: the Queen will leave in its wake. #sf

#CharacterIdDressUpAs is Mieli. She's an Oortian warrior -- "so battle-ready she has a fusion reactor embedded in her thigh"—and wings, let's not forget wings.

This is a tight, at times confusing but ultimately rewarding far-future story full of innovative science fiction concepts. There‘s so much happening and at such a dizzying pace that it‘s hard to keep up, especially early on. There is a large amount of exotic terminology, combined with the lack of exposition and the in medias res start of the plot, making it an intellectually exhausting but rewarding reading experience. #outofthisworld #booktober

Look what came!!! My Book Bath Box! I'm so excited for this. The book has been on my radar for ages and all the goodies (a bath bomb, some tea, and a candle) are great! Definitely look this box up!
