How to Find a Princess
How to Find a Princess: Runaway Royals | Alyssa Cole
20 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
New York Times and USA Today bestseller Alyssa Coles second Runaway Royals novel is a queer Anastasia retelling, featuring a long-lost princess who finds love with the female investigator tasked with tracking her down. Makeda Hicks has lost her job and her girlfriend in one fell swoop. The last thing shes in the mood for is to rehash the story of her grandmothers infamous summer fling with a runaway prince from Ibarania, or the investigator from the World Federation of Monarchies tasked with searching for Ibaranias missing heir. Yet when Beznaria Chetchevaliere crashes into her life, the sleek and sexy investigator exudes exactly the kind of chaos that organized and efficient Makeda finds irresistible, even if Bez is determined to drag her into a world of royal duty Makeda wants nothing to do with. When a threat to her grandmothers livelihood pushes Makeda to agree to return to Ibarania, Bez takes her on a transatlantic adventure with a crew of lovable weirdos, a fake marriage, and one-bed hijinks on the high seas. When they finally make it to Ibarania, they realize theres more at stake than just cash and crown, and Makeda must learn what it means to fight for what she desires and not what she feels bound to by duty.

Didn‘t finish this one. I loved Makeda. I thought Beznaria, Makeda‘s grandmother, & Makeda‘s mom were manipulative. I got as far as the scene when Beznaria tricks Makeda into going on a container ship. Beznaria claims that she technically didn‘t lie, since Makeda assumed it was a cruise & never asked what kind of ship it was. I can‘t stand that kind of behavior. It ruined the book for me & I decided to bail.

Anyway, here‘s my cat Lorelei.

Alyssa Cole is hit or miss for me, and sadly her first full length sapphic romance was more of a miss. The characters were great, but the middle chunk really dragged; not enough character growth or romantic/royal plot. Then the end felt rushed. I listened to the audiobook and while Karen Chilton is great for an African American woman's voice like Makeda, it's disappointing they couldn't get an actor who could also do the book's other fun accents.

Wow 2% in and I'm already furious on Makeda's behalf that she's been laid off and dumped in the same day. Damn!!

Sad to report that despite Alyssa Cole being one of my fave romance authors, this one wasn‘t quite active enough for me (though I loved Makeda). Also when is the next Alyssa Cole romance release? 😭

My #audiowalk took me about 70% into HOW TO FIND A PRINCESS. It‘s still delightful, but the pace has flagged a bit.

This was a fun little Anastasia influenced romance. I loved the back and forth banter between Bez and Makeda and seeing them getting to a point of understanding and love. Loved the ending and the reveal of what happened to the original queen and why. #BookspinBingo

Perfect timing finishing this one at the start to Pride month. This is an adorable rom-com, f/f fairytale. If you like quirky characters and ridiculous yet fun plots you will enjoy this one. The one criticism is that it does meander a bit and the pacing is not perfect. It is very cute and I still definitely recommend.

Quick marine biologist check in on the assertion that crabs are good natured and lobsters are grumpy!

🦀: they can be fine, but the only animal I have ever met with pure hate in their hearts is blue crabs

🦞: I once met a lobster who would come up to the side of the tank he was in for snacks - a good friend!

khooliha Conclusion: neither, other than blue crabs, are particularly grumpy! Though a rock crab did once tag me bad enough that I bled... The same summer a juvenile lobster carefully grabbed my finger with its claw! Real conclusion: I love crustaceans. 3y

I loved this journey with Makeda and Bez. Bez is determined as determined to find the heir to the Ibaranian throne as Makeda is to not be that heir. I loved their fake relationship that turned into something more!

Freaking loved this new royal romance from Alyssa Cole. A woman determined not to be a princess with a bad habit of giving too much of herself to others and a neurodivergent investigator trying to find the lost heir to the Ibaranian throne and clear her grandmother's name. Fake marriage, bed sharing, adventure on the high seas--there was no part of this book I didn't love! Another 5-star book from an incredible author.

mdemanatee Omg I was already excited but I somehow missed there‘s fake marriage involved. 😍 3y

I have a migraine, we're about to get an ice storm, and the baby is on a bland food diet for the next few days as we try to make sure she doesn't have an obstruction from eating a sweedish dish cloth a few days ago. At least my book is really good. Happy Valentine's Day!

DGRachel Well that just sounds like way too much fun! I hope you feel better soon! 3y
Crazeedi Oh no!!! I hope everything comes out ok!! 3y
