Just Last Night
Just Last Night: A Novel | Mhairi McFarlane
International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane explores lifelong friendships, long-buried secrets, and unexpected love in a heartfelt, emotional new novel, perfect for fans of Evvie Drake Starts Over, The Two Lives of Lydia Bird, or In Five Years. Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can't stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too. But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever. In the aftermath, Eve's world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve's future veers in a surprising new direction... They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?

I was expecting a rom-com, in reality this is a book about relationships, grief and lies we tell ourselves. At lot of stuff was packed into this book. Not a fan of the MC. She whined a lot about an unrequited love. But I enjoyed reading about this close knot set of friends. The plot was well done and I liked the pacing of it. 4⭐

I went into this thinking it was going to be a light rom-com (based on the book summary) but boy was I wrong! It was definitely more of an emotional story about friendship, rather than an unrequited love as the tag line suggests. Still a great story, looking forward to reading more by the author 💛

TheAromaofBooks I've only read one book by this author & it was the same way - I was expecting a fluffy romcom, but ended up with something a lot more serious. It was still a good book, but I wish books were promoted more honestly. I don't think I liked the book as much as I could have, because it wasn't what I was in the mood for when I picked it up, if that makes sense. 3y
samantharoberts @TheAromaofBooks exactly!!! I was in the mood to read something else, and feel like I got a little duped, which almost made me DNF until I was more in the mood for this type of story. It was still a good book, just wish the blurb and tag line were more honest 3y
TheAromaofBooks I just don't understand why publishers (or whoever it is who does covers/blurbs) thinks it's a good idea to give readers the wrong impression about a book?? I'm much more likely to dislike/give a lower rating to a book that isn't what I'm expecting, just because I was in the mood for something other than what I got. It's like handing me pizza when I was ready for ice cream... still good, but not what I was ready to eat?? 😂 3y
samantharoberts @TheAromaofBooks YES! I completely agree and love that analogy! It‘s so true 3y

A story of friendship, unrequited love, secrets, and betrayal. I LOVED this book. The relationships between the four friends are complicated and bound by mistakes and hidden truths which are gradually revealed as the story progresses. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

MidnightBookGirl It sounds good, and I love your photo! 3y

I enjoyed this story, it's also sad, emotional with four friends dealing with their past and future. Secrets come out and the knowledge from this can't be changed which means the friendship between Eve, Justin, Susie and Ed will forever be different.

I finished this one last weekend. It wasn't quite the romance I thought. It's about a group of friends and the grief of losing someone. Of finding out a secret and seeing things and people differently. But I did really enjoy it. It is a British book with a British reader and it caused me to start thinking in an accent for some reason, which was funny. I haven't done that with other books with accents before. But this one stuck a bit. 🤷‍♀️

Eve and Susie were inseparable their entire lives.
You will be riveted by this story of the secrets and sacrifices of friendship, and the chances and choices that shape our lives. It is a story of relationships defined by savage, unexpected loss, and excavated truths. The luminous moments in this book sparkle like gems throughout the narrative, from astute comparisons with the mechanics of Gatsby to My Best Friend's Wedding.

Another enemies-to-lovers #Romance with a very sad twist right at the beginning.

After Pub Quiz Night the four friends part ways, but only three make it home. Eve's best friend dies after an accident that very same night.

Now the friends are confronted with the loss, the grief, the secrets, the misunderstandings, and all the questions that can never be answered. But, it could also be a chance at love.

Great writing.

Sitting outside, in the sunshine. Both kids were allowed to go back to school today. From 0 to 100 for them, both started with a written exam in the morning, both have a long day ahead of them. Made a bento box (from scratch) for Kid#2.

Now, I'm - get your red pens out to mark your calendars - writing a TBR for the summer months. 😱

Andrew65 That‘s a tough start! 3y
julesG @Andrew65 It's crazy. Really. The kids haven't seen each other properly since November and they go back to school to write exams. Says a lot about our educational system here in Germany. 3y
Andrew65 @julesG That‘s crazy. Ours had been back for 4 - 5 weeks before we did any assessments and even those didn‘t count for anything. Just a base, one for us and so we could plan future learning. 3y

Andrew65 With being out of school the biggest thing we noticed was loss of stamina and getting tired easily which would really impact on exams. 3y
julesG @Andrew65 My daughter "went back" to school in March. Small group, supervised while doing distance learning, because she'd been doing all the things except distance learning, even during zoom meetings. My son has been at home since Nov and only went back to school for a few exams during the last weeks. They'll both be knackered when they get home today. And then I have to be the bad guy reminding them of the "instead of an exam" work they have ⬇️ 3y
julesG To finish by tomorrow evening. 😣😣😣 Not to mention the exam preparation for the upcoming exams during this and next week. It's absolute bonkers. 3y
Crazeedi @julesG ok third time trying to post comment, my heart breaks for the children, they will pay a heavy price for all this 3y
Andrew65 @julesG Good luck to them. 3y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi @julesG I‘ve been impressed how the children are recovering from this and making accelerated progress. I have positive feelings on this for the medium term. They will recover from this with the right approach. Biggest concern is those at or near exam years. Our children have been totally brilliant and so hungry for learning. Their resilience has been amazing! 3y
julesG @Andrew65 thanks! I'm still hopeful it'll all work out in the end. 3y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 that is certainly good to hear Andrew, I know children are resilient, and with dedicated teachers and administrators like you I pray they move forward without losing much or being behind! Thanks for what you do Andrew 3y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi The children will close the gap on any lost learning as time goes on, totally confident in this, and we are already seeing signs of this. Will have a clearer picture when we finish our end of year assessments in June. Thanks, a great time behind me 😍 3y
Andrew65 @julesG Keep fingers crossed for you. 🤞 3y

I really liked how this one progressed in the end, but I sort of wish it had started near the middle and gone on more at the end.

It‘s characters were well developed and exuded humor innately.

Putting this in a free spot for #bookspinbingo
