Can't give enough praise to this beautiful ode to dog/human relationships. It's unknown who benefitted more: Rick or Speck. The author's sweet Southern narration only adds to the genuine emotional storytelling that he crafts through highs and lows of physical and mental health. Lucky you @britt_brooke ! It's been years since we've had a dog of our own, but here's a pic of our somewhat speckled grandpup dressed for his prom picture. #DogsofLitsy

britt_brooke Aw, what a handsome boy! So happy you loved this, too. 🤍🐾 8mo
dabbe Such a handsome fella! 🖤🐾🖤 8mo
lynneamch Thx @britt_brooke . Looks like your Champ is a speckled beauty, too! 8mo

@Tonton and @britt_brooke recommended this book. It was a delightful Sunday read. Bragg writes of life in Alabama in such a descriptive way that you‘re placed right in the thick of each season. His description of abandoned dogs roaming about, cats being left at the dump, shook me a bit. Along comes Speck, an Australian Shepherd, desperately in need of food and care. Bragg‘s love for this wild, crazy, half blind dog is so lovely to read about.

britt_brooke I‘m so happy you loved this, too! Nice review. 💚 2y
Suet624 @britt_brooke thanks for recommending it. Now I want to read some of Bragg‘s other work. I‘ve only read his first and his last. 🙂 2y
britt_brooke @Suet624 I hope you do! I think there‘s just one I haven‘t read, but I‘ve enjoyed the rest. I met him once and he‘s delightful! 2y
Tonton @Suet624 So glad you liked it!😎 2y

I hate stories, books, and movies about dogs because I end up using every Kleenex in the house and my sleeves get wet and my heart shatters. My favorite photo is of me as a toddler astride Mimi, our Shepard collie/collie mix; there‘s been dogs in my family all my life. So damn happy about this memoir of a terrible bad boy of a dog because in the end he‘s still ALIVE and happily still his bad self.

batsy Sounds great ❤️ 2y
Tonton @batsy I was very fearful that something bad would happen to him; he is wild -force of nature-and not in the best of health, stubborn, not in the least cute but what a dog! 2y
Suet624 I stacked this a while back but your review makes me want to run out and grab it now. 2y
Tonton @Suet624 Thank you 😊 Hope you enjoy! 2y

The story of Rick Bragg's 'terrible' dog.

I found myself laughing most of the time and tearing up some of the time.

I always listen to Rick's audiobooks because that southern drawl gets me every time.

PS - here is a picture of my 'mostly good' dog, Liesel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Recouping from a plethora of ailments, Bragg finds himself inhabiting his momma‘s basement in the Alabama mountains. The Braggs, he explains, are a family of dog lovers and stray rescuers. One day, an emaciated Australian Shepherd happens upon their land and stays. He‘s a “terrible” dog. Turns out, Speck and Bragg are just what the other needed. Dog love is its own special kind. Loved this! Bragg is solidly one of my favorites.

Prairiegirl_reading I have so many Rick Bragg books on my tbr. Sounds like I‘m adding another! 3y

Just finished working on this audiobook and it was so, so good. It‘s released in September and I definitely recommend.

britt_brooke I love Rick Bragg so much. I just finished this and loved it! 3y
SkeletonKey @britt_brooke - I wish I had known the dog would live, it would have been much less stressful 😆 Glad you enjoyed it too. 3y
britt_brooke @SkeletonKey Gah, right?! I kept waiting for that. Usually when there‘s a dog on the cover, it means immense heartache. 3y

New Rick Bragg book coming in August:

Speck is not a good boy. He is, a terrible boy, a defiant, self-destructive, often malodorous boy, a grave robber and screen door moocher who spends his days playing chicken with the Fed Ex man, picking fights with thousand-pound livestock, and rolling in donkey manure, and his nights howling at the moon.
