Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King, is an ordained minister, an attorney, and one of this country's most admired speakers. As this remarkable collection of her sermons and speeches makes clear, she shares with her father a rare gift for oratory and the wisdom and compassion to inspire others. The collection begins with words designed to "disturb the comfortable." Tackling such controversial subjects as our disaffected youth, gun control, and the death penalty, King paints a compelling picture of the spiritual decay and deep-seated racism that infects our society. In the second part of the book, a selection of sermons focusing on "comforting the disturbed," King's belief in the power of faith to restore our communities, morally and spiritually, rings forth. The church, she asserts, must return to its helping and healing mission, and each of us, looking into our hearts, must put aside our differences and remember that each human life is precious.
Riveted_Reader_MelissaYes! And the reason why I don‘t often frequent churches much anymore… they are a bit to human-centric. (And yes, I realize this statement will make no sense to many).12mo
GingerAnticsWow. I didn‘t know that about the 1967 poll. That‘s terrible. Then again, it‘s not all that surprising. Look at how people view BLM. It‘s probably pretty much the same thought.3y
Scochrane26Have you been to the Civil Rights museum in Memphis? That was emotional—to see his room, the balcony, the place where the killer was. So much info there, I really want to go back.3y
TheBookHippie@GingerAntics As living with that hatred towards me the past decades it gives me solace. Maybe some day justice will happen I hope I live to see it.3y
TheBookHippie@GingerAntics the same people screaming hate at BLM post MLK and seriously do not know what they‘re doing. They think he is the Kumbaya and use his statements for peace to continue squashing justice . Makes me sick.3y
Scochrane26@TheBookHippie I went as part of a missions trip with middle-schoolers. I think it was meaningful to them, but I couldn‘t stay as long as I wanted since we had other things to do. It‘s a lot to take in on one trip.3y
GingerAntics@TheBookHippie oh, the nut jobs quoting MLK agains BLM like they‘re in the right disgust me.3y
TheBookHippie@GingerAntics Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered because he opposed white supremacy. He wouldn‘t be liked by them if he were alive today, and they don‘t get to pretend they love him. It‘s incredibly inappropriate and disrespectful.3y
GingerAntics@TheBookHippie they rage against political correctness, but then they only pretend to like him because it‘s PC. They can claim they‘re not white supremacists and “good people” because because they quoted MLK once. 🙄3y
