The Fortress: A Love Story | Danielle Trussoni
9 posts | 4 read | 17 to read
The critically acclaimed, bestselling author of Falling Through the Earth and Angelology returns with this much-anticipated memoir of love and transformation in France. The Fortress is Peter Mayle meets Eat, Pray, Love, a gorgeously written account of one womans journey to the other side of the romantic fairytale. "If I had been another woman, I might have been skeptical. But I wasnt another woman. I was a woman ready to be swept away. I was a woman ready for her story to begin. As a writer, story was all that mattered. Rising action, dramatic complication, heroes and villains and dark plots. I believed I was the author of my life, that I controlled the narration." From their first kiss, twenty-seven-year-old writer Danielle Trussoni is spellbound by a novelist from Bulgaria. The two share a love of jazz and books and travel, passions that intensify their whirlwind romance. Eight years later, hopeful to renew their marriage, Danielle and her husband move to the south of France, to a picturesque medieval village in the Languedoc. It is here, in a haunted stone fortress built by the Knights Templar, that she comes to understand the dark, subterranean forces that have been following her all along. While Danielle and her husband eventually part, Danielle's time in the fortress brings precious wisdom about life and love that she could not have learned otherwise. Ultimately, she finds the strength to overcome her illusions, and start again. An incisive look at romantic love, The Fortress is one womans fight to understand the complexities of her own heart, told by one of the best writers of her generation.

Pickpick

This never, ever happens! I finished a book so quickly. It‘s a combination of having a tiny bit of extra time while my kids sleep/eat and the book being so unputdownable.

The Fortress isn‘t exactly what I thought it would be...but it is utterly captivating. I had anticipated more of the actual “fortress” (ancient home in the south of France) but got the intimate details of a crumbling marriage. I highly recommend this one ⭐️

#TBRtemptation post! (They're coming fast today, lol!) An interesting memoir! 27-year old writer Danielle falls deeply for a Bulgarian novelist. 8 years later, to rejuvenate their marriage, they move to a former Knights Templar stone fortress in a medieval village in southern France. They eventually part, but she learns things about wisdom & love she wouldn't have any other way. A woman's look at romantic love. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Pickpick

After several difficult years of marriage, Danielle Trussoni was desperate for things to change. In a dramatic play to save the relationship, she and Nikolai purchased a medieval fortress in a French village and moved their family there. The romantic setting would become a battleground where Danielle tried to protect her children and save herself from Nikolai‘s manipulations and increasing instability.

Ditching hot Southern California for chilly Provence on a Sunday morning. An iced coffee, a late breakfast, and a book--not sure I need much more than this today.
