Impersonation | Heidi Pitlor

By turns revealing, hilarious, dishy, and razor-sharp, Impersonation lives in that rarest of sweet spots: the propulsive page-turner for people with high literary standards. Rebecca Makkai, author of The Great Believers TOGETHER, THEY MAKE THE PERFECT FEMINIST MOTHER Allie Lang is a professional ghostwriter and a perpetually broke single mother to a young boy. Years of navigating her own and Americas cultural definition of motherhood have left her a lapsed idealist. Lana Breban is a high-profile lawyer, economist, and advocate for womens rights with designs on elected office. She also has a son. Lana and her staff have decided she needs help softening her image in the eyes of the public and that a memoir about her life as a mother will help. Allie struggles to write Lanas book as obstacles pile up: not enough childcare, looming deadlines, an unresponsive subject, an ill-defined romantic relationship on the verge of slipping away. Eventually, Lana comes to require far too much of Allie and even her son. Allies ability to stand up for herself and ask for all that she deserves will ultimately determine the power that she can wield over her own life. With the satirical eye of Tom Perrottas Mrs. Fletcher and the incisiveness of Meg Wolitzers The Female Persuasion, acclaimed writer Heidi Pitlor tells a timely, bitingly funny, and insightful story of ambition, motherhood, and class.

This book hit on a lot of current political issues, but didn‘t do so with much finesse. The book is mainly an account of the struggles of a single mother. There is the ghostwriter component to the plot, but it seemed secondary to the single parent story. 3⭐️ #hoopla

I received this ARC from the publisher. An intriguing concept: the main character is a ghostwriter, and the story is set against the backdrop of the 2016 election (🤮), and #MeToo movement.

I saw the direction the story was going in a mile away, and the character Lana was frankly, infuriating. The characters could have had more depth, so a potentially powerful story became a light read that may be forgettable in a few months.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Happy Friday!! I am so glad it‘s Friday.

Made it through the 1st week of remote learning & working in the same room, only 17 more weeks to go. 😬 Celebrating with🍷 and reading!

It was an eventful week: major oil spill near our new home 😳, current home appraised, down a car all week b/c someone backed into our parked car, and I interviewed for a FT nonprofit program management position and made it to the second step in the process!

Bookwormjillk Congratulations on your interview! 4y
alisiakae @Bookwormjillk thank you! I had to respond to 2 case study scenarios today and provide references, so 🤞🤞 4y

alisiakae @squirrelbrain @TrishB Thank you! The pay is more than double my current job, and much more aligned to what I used to do before maya was born. I‘m cautiously excited! 4y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I had a runaway Amazon delivery truck total my parked car this summer too! Solidarity. 🤜🤛 4y
alisiakae @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards oh no! That‘s much worse! I hope Amazon handled it appropriately. 4y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Our insurance company (USAA) was great at handling the layers of coverage, and we were fortunate to have enough savings for a down payment to replace the car right away--a need as a 1-car household, even with working from home due to Covid. 4y

Interesting premise. A ghostwriter writes a memoir for a politician to make her more warm and fuzzy to the public and ends up with a book that is more fiction than memoir. The last third of the book was less convincing and more contrived than the rest. #ARC #LibraryThing #EarlyReviewer

2020 has become the year of screwing up reading commitments. 😔 I received the Impersonations arc months ago, and totally dropped the ball on reading it in time for the blog tour. Just started it last night, and really enjoying it so far!

I also owe a big apology to all of the #summerfun participants, along with @StayCurious . This summer certainly did not turn out the way I expected back when I came up with the idea back in May! 😣⬇️⬇️

alisiakae I didn‘t realize the job I started in April would be just as hectic during the summer as it was in the spring, or that we would be selling our house and moving! Some great things have happened, and some things have fallen through the cracks. And then the crap things, like my grandfather‘s Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis. I‘m in a little lull right now, and just hope it lasts for a while. 4y
StayCurious Don‘t worry at all! Take care of you! 4y

alisiakae @StayCurious @rachelm Thank you! 💕 Things have quieted down here a bit, but every time I say that lately, shit hits the fan. 🤣🤣 My daughter‘s remote learning is going remarkably well! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Taking care of yourself & your family is #1. We get that. I hope this lull continues for a while. 💗 4y

This novel is about a ghostwriter who gets hired to write a book for a promising feminist activist. As a writer, I felt like Pitlor perfectly captured the desperate search for ideas when writing and how downright tempting distractions can be. It's not heavy on plot but still a fun read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc

Got the ARC I won from LibraryThing. Wondering if I should pause my reading of Jane Eyre so I can get this one read and reviewed sooner rather than later.... It is going to take me a long time to read Jane Eyre.
