#ToyCover #NewYearNewBook @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs When I read My Ideal Bookshelf last week, I was charmed to see how many artists had a checkered spine from this Dare Wright series on their shelves. I know The Lonely Doll and Little Bear insinuated themselves into my imagination, but seeing how ubiquitous they were when I thought of this book as obscure was really cool.

Eggs It‘s lovely and quaint ❤️🤩👌🏼 4mo

I definitely wouldn‘t read this to kids today. It has a slightly creepy vibe, and the main little girl/doll character is way over sexualized for no apparent purpose. But I‘m still glad I picked it for one of my #Booked2021 prompts, and I‘m still giving it a pick. The photography is actually really striking. And it resonated really strongly with me. I‘m not 💯 sure if I actually read part of this series as a child,⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame or if these kinds of scenes and images were just so endemic that it feels like I did. Either way I feel like I just found a little puzzle piece, which is always a pick in my book. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers #TBRRead @StayCurious 2y
Chrissyreadit This cover reminds me of a book I had when I was little about a doll hospital. And then this week I read a book about trafficking with a “doll hospital” that made me wonder about the 70‘s. 2y
IndoorDame @Chrissyreadit Yeah, weird how different things were. I looked up the author after I read this. This one was published in 57 and apparently became a popular series of like 10 books. They went out of print for a while and then there was another run of them in the 80s. One of them may have actually had a doll hospital. They all had that same doll from the cover and her little family of 2 specific teddy bears. (edited) 2y

StayCurious Your reviews are always so smart - I love reading them 2y
IndoorDame @StayCurious thank you! 🥰 2y
rubyslippersreads I loved this as a little girl and still have my childhood copy. I have one or two of the other books that I was lucky enough to find at library sales. They go for hundreds of dollars at antiquarian book fairs. 2y
rubyslippersreads @IndoorDame I saw the author‘s biography at a thrift shop and, although I loved the pink gingham cover, I left it behind, because the author‘s life was just too sad and strange. 2y

I loved this book. #ThrowbackThursday

ManyWordsLater I‘ve heard... interesting... things about this book..... does it hold up when you read it as an adult? 6y
Samplergal @ManyWordsLater I read it about ten years ago when I found it in a thrift store. I felt the photos were kinda creepy but also campy. I read a little bit on the author and photographer who was a bit of a different type, if my memory serves me. My grandmother gave me the book originally. ❤️ 6y
Hollyreadsalot My mom would read this to us as kids! 6y

"I may be a silly," Mr. Bear answered, "but I know when a naughty little girl needs a spanking."
?When Edith and Little Bear misbehaved Mr. Bear sometimes had to go to extremes in order to teach them a lesson! Lol!!!

Found this gem at the library! The photos are hauntingly creepy yet beautiful. I love this kind of thing.

christineandbooks We used to have a book when I was a child that was a fairy tale type story told with dolls in photos. It was beautiful and haunting. Need to see if I can remember what it was. Was this a 70's thing in children's books?? 7y
christineandbooks I found it! It's by the same author! And apparently not all the pics are of dolls, but some are if the photographer herself. I spent hours looking at this book as a kid... 7y
Linda906 Omg- this book brings back memories! I owned this book when I was a child. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!! 7y

redphoto3 I ordered this once for a customer! I had never heard of it and became fascinated by it! 7y
ReadingRover @christineandbooks I have to get that one from the library too!!! I love this kind of thing. I used to do photography myself and have a darkroom. I also found the author's biography and I'm going to read that too. She seems pretty interesting. @Linda906 My mom said the same thing! She had 2 of the books as a kid. Her and her cousin used to read them. Did you see the other pictures I posted? 7y

My favorite children's book when I was little. This and The Three Billy Goats Gruff were the two books I remember borrowing the most from my library. I need to buy myself this book. #riotgrams

MCYmermaid I find that photo deeply disturbing. 😐 7y
AmandaL @MCYmermaid It was kind of a disturbing children's book. There's a fascinating biography of the author that illuminates why her books had such uncomfortable themes of punishment and abandonment. They were originally published in the 1950s and 60s, and definitely don't work as children's books now. If you'd prefer, I can remove the post. 7y
MCYmermaid That's a kind but unnecessary offer. Just sharing that it weirded me out. 7y

LeahBergen The whole story of these books and her life is fascinating (freaky, but fascinating 😂). 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Actually I agree with the weirded out AND with the please don't remove it. This made me think of inappropriately funny thoughts.... like alternative titles: Bettie Page For Barbie's or 50 Shades of Teddy Bears (edited) 7y

I bet I'm not the only grownup #Litten who wants their very own Edith and Little Bear. 😄 #anthropomorphiccharacters #feistyfeb

I ordered this from Amazon for Christmas. This 1957 series was a childhood favorite. Some thought the pictures & storyline were creepy but I remember spending hours pouring through these books! Glad to have one back in my hands! 💓📚💗

Okay, so maybe this isn't a super "fun" #FunFridayPhoto, but this was one of my favorite books as a child--it was one of my mom's childhood favorites as well, so we used to read it together. I realized around age fifteen how disturbing it is (this image comes to mind as an example of how dark it is). But the photography in it is still beautiful. Haunting, but beautiful. But yes, a very strange "children's" book.

PatriciaU The Lonely Doll books have been coveted by some of my library friends for their complete creepiness, but, seriously, when I worked as a shelver at a public library in the70s, these books were incredibly popular. 8y
katedensen @PatriciaU My mom probably read it in the early to mid 60s...she was very artsy and the beautiful photos eclipsed any understanding of the creepiness...I think a lot of people had similar experiences. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 So that's a picture from the book? That's really quite something! 😳 8y
PatriciaU Definitely a different time.... 8y
