Tell It to the Bees
Tell It to the Bees | Fiona Shaw
6 posts | 8 read | 15 to read
Lydia Weekes is a beautiful young woman, although she hardly knows it. Her volatile husband all but ignores her and then he is gone completely, leaving her to support their son Charlie on her own with longer shifts at the local factory. A secretive schoolboy, Charlie is increasingly left to his own rich imagination - until he meets the town's new female GP, who encourages his interest in her beehives. This is the 1950s: when patients sit in front of a doctor's home fire in a carpeted waiting room, abortion is illegal and sexual freedom a source of scandal. When a wary friendship between Charlie's mother and Dr Jean Markham becomes a startling and renewing love affair, their secret passion invites suspicion from Lydia's vindictive sister-in-law, Pam, threatening the safety of her son.

A good story that takes its time. Nothing is rushed. Has one of the best written child characters I‘ve read in a very long time. Captured the maturity, reasoning, interests and observations of a 10/11 year old boy perfectly. He‘s given full personhood by the author, never less than the adults. Recommend if you like stories that develop slowly. Ending a bit abrupt but maybe I just didn‘t want it to end.

Watched via Netflix. Fair warning deals with forced abortion, racism, and anti lesbian action and sentiment. Was a good flick though.

I‘m not really into books that are just romance, but there‘s a lot more in this. Charlie coming to terms with his parents breaking up, his dad being an arse and his mum falling in love with another woman. It‘s the 1950s and such things are shunned!
Well written throughout and moving in places.

Hey #littens long time no see! Back to the library finally. My sister loaned me this, insisting I read it - she's good at recommending things.

Reminded me of Michael Frayn's Spies, but with an LGBTQ twist - which I appreciate. Think I fell in love with Jean and Lydia too.
