Early Irish Myths and Sagas
Early Irish Myths and Sagas | Various, Jeffrey Gantz, Tiruvalluvar
4 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
First written down in the eighth century AD, these early Irish stories depict a far older world part myth, part legend and part history. Rich with magic and achingly beautiful, they speak of a land of heroic battles, intense love and warrior ideals, in which the otherworld is explored and men mingle freely with the gods. From the vivid adventures of the great Celtic hero Cu Chulaind, to the stunning "Exile of the Sons of Uisliu" a tale of treachery, honour and romance these are masterpieces of passion and vitality, and form the foundation for the Irish literary tradition: a mythic legacy that was a powerful influence on the work of Yeats, Synge and Joyce. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

#rocktober #foxylady @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB In Irish mythology there are many superstitions regarding red haired women. Fishermen will not go to sea if they pass a red headed woman on the way to the boat.
These superstitions are called PISEOGS. #foxylady ( pic of book we have )

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Very interesting, especially since the rest of the world thinks of Ireland and it‘s red-heads. 7y
Cathythoughts @Riveted_Reader_Melissa There is an Irish read head convention held every year now. So I‘d say the old superstitions are long ago & far away. I‘m not sure what it means myself 7y
Cinfhen Cool! I love learning new things!!! 7y

More #mythology !!! I could post books for this prompt all day 😂 These are some of the books used for my thesis. It's all Irish mythology (and some law tracts). Some are mine but most belong to the university. If you want to get to know Irish mythology the tagged book by Jeffrey Gantz is a great place to start. Good translations and some helpfull notes and introductions.
