Pickpick

4/5 Saramago's storytelling reminds me the most of Garcia Marquez or Rushdie but B & B had one of those qualities that sets it apart stylistically. I didn't love everything about the sprawling sentences without punctuation other than a comma- dialogue was especially tough, but overall it served the subject matter well, turning from romantic descriptions of 18th century Portugal in one breath to biting sarcasm in the next. Magical and memorable.
