The Cardturner
The Cardturner | Louis Sachar
3 posts | 15 read | 5 to read
When Alton's ageing, blind uncle asks him to attend bridge games with him, he agrees. After all, it's better than a crappy summer job in the local shopping mall, and Alton's mother thinks it might secure their way to a good inheritance sometime in the future. But, like all apparently casual choices in any of Louis Sachar's wonderful books, this choice soon turns out to be a lot more complex than Alton could ever have imagined. As his relationship with his uncle develops, and he meets the very attractive Toni, deeply buried secrets are uncovered and a romance that spans decades is finally brought to a conclusion.Alton's mother is in for a surprise!

Pickpick

I did the audiobook for The Cardturner! I picked it up at the library before I went out of town but didn‘t listen to it until the drive back, Dec 1. It was way more interesting than a book about bridge (the card game) has any right to be!

Pictured is me with my 1st ornament, apparently as a toddler I was into unicorns so this ornament has been with me for over 3 decades!

#YAYAY2 I play so much bridge -- got back from a huge Huge regional tournament this weekend. Played against people from all over the USA and Canada. What's the difference between YA and juvenile fiction?

Lindy YA is a marketing category for books whose primary audience is aged 13-17 (roughly). Middle Grade, or Children's Fiction, is for a younger audience, about 8-12 years. Juvenile fiction is sometimes an alternate term for middle grade fiction, but can also be used as an umbrella for children's and YA books. 7y
Lindy Sarah Hannah Gomez wrote a good description of the difference between YA and Middle Grade: http://thelearnedfangirl.com/2017/04/there-is-a-difference-between-middle-grade-... 7y
