Team of Five
Team of Five: The Presidents Club in the Age of Trump | Kate Andersen Brower
35 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Residence and First Womenalso a New York Times bestsellercomes a poignant, news-making look at the lives of the five former presidents in the wake of their White House years, including the surprising friendships they have formed through shared perspective and empathy. After serving the highest office of American government, five menJimmy Carter, the late George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obamabecame members of the worlds most exclusive fraternity. In Team of Five, Kate Andersen Brower goes beyond the White House to uncover what, exactly, comes after the presidency, offering a glimpse into the complex relationships of these five former presidents, and how each of these men views his place in a nation that has been upended by the Oval Offices current, norm-breaking occupant, President Donald Trump. With an empathetic yet critical eye and firsthand testimony from the Carters, Donald Trump, and the top aides, friends, and family members of the five former presidents, Team of Five takes us inside the exclusive world of these powerful men and their families, including the unlikely friendship between George W. Bush and Michelle Obama, the last private visits Bill Clinton and Barack Obama shared with George H.W. Bush, and the Obamas flight to Palm Springs after Donald Trumps inauguration. Perhaps most timely, this insightful, illuminating book overflows with anecdotes about how the ex-presidents are working to combat President Trumps attempts to undo the achievements and hard work accomplished during their own terms. Perhaps most poignantly, Team of Five sheds light on the inherent loneliness and inevitable feelings of powerlessness and frustration that come with no longer being the most important person in the world, but a leader with only symbolic power. There are ways, though, that these men, and their wives, have become powerful political and cultural forces in American life, even as so-called formers. Team of Five includes 16 pages of color photographs.

Explores the personal experiences of the 5 living former presidents during the Trump presidency. Identifies “rules” of the former POTUS club, outlines how each Pres dealt with each. For example, post-presidential life. Includes references to historical presidencies. Asks about the legacy of Trump and if he can fit into the tradition. Overall, interesting, unique and educational. #nonfiction #politics #bookreview #ushistory #uspolitics

Leniverse Mean and ugly is mostly for show, I guess. Although it seems rather two-faced to me. 3y
keithmalek @Leniverse It's not exactly "for show." They only became friends after Bush was out of office. It was because of George W. Bush that they got to know each other after W sent them both on a disaster relief mission. 3y

George W. Bush makes between $100,000 and $175,000 per speech. He came under criticism in 2012 for charging $100,000 to speak at a charity for wounded veterans who lost limbs in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, wars for which he was responsible.

A few days after leaving the White House, he and Michelle spent ten days on Virgin CEO Richard Branson's private Necker Island, in the British Virgin Islands. It costs more than $40,000 to rent the whole island for a night and $25,000 to stay in a villa for a week.

She had long been ready to leave. At the 2016 White House Correspondents Dinner, President Obama had joked about someone jumping the White House fence the week before. "I have to give the Secret Service credit. They found Michelle and brought her back. She's safe back at home now. It's only nine more months, baby. Settle down."

On his last flight on Air Force One, Lyndon Johnson made sure to keep blankets, towels, and anything he could get his hands on bearing the presidential seal. Somehow he absconded with the president's chair, which had been bolted to the floor.

This is a really good and interesting look at what presidents do after they finish their terms, how they get on with each other - and how Donald Trump fits (or seems not to) into the club. Worth a read - and not as depressing as the Trump presidency books tend to be.
