Fully Loaded Thrillers: The Complete and Collected Stories of Blake Crouch
Fully Loaded Thrillers: The Complete and Collected Stories of Blake Crouch | Blake Jack Crouch
2 posts | 1 read
From the Foreword by J.A. Konrath: "Crouch is one of the best thriller short story writers I know. He uses words like an artist uses a paintbrush; to hurt, to stun, to shock, to provoke, to touch. This collection also features my very favorite short story of all time. Not just my favorite by Crouch, but the best one I've ever read by anyone. It's called "Unconditional." It is flat-out brilliant and unforgettable, and that one tale is worth the price of this entire collection." From the author of DESERT PLACES and LOCKED DOORS comes this complete collection of short stories and novellas. *69 - Tim and Laura West receive a bizarre voicemail on their answering machine that seems to have unintentionally recorded a brutal murder. But what happens when the killer realizes their mistake? This story develops over one terrifying evening, and this young couple will never be the same. REMAKING - Tragic events unfold in a snowy, sleepy Colorado town. From the first scene, in which a man sits alone in the cold, watching a father and son in a diner, you know something is about to go horribly wrong. You may think you know what's happening, but in this thrilling, heartbreaking story, nothing is as it seems. ON THE GOOD, RED ROAD - A group of four hard men trying to reach a remote 19th Century mining town become stranded in an early blizzard and resort to drastic, terrifying measures, to stay alive. SHINING ROCK - An older couple encounter a strange and menacing visitor during a camping trip in the North Carolina mountains. Friendly at first, this stranger seems to know them, seems to know their secrets, and as things escalate, they become convinced that they may never leave these mountains alive. PERFECT LITTLE TOWN - Ron and Jessica Stahl are a power couple from California, on a Christmas holiday in Colorado. When they stop for the afternoon in sleepy Lone Cone, they're charmed by the quaint tourist town. But the folksy hospitality will vanish as the sun drops behind the mountains. The Stahls couldn't have picked a worse night of the year to get snowed into this perfect little town with a dark, dark secret. SERIAL - The classic horror short I wrote with J.A. Konrath, in which we turn our attention to the twin golden rules of hitchhiking: # 1: Don't go hitchhiking, because the driver who picks you up could be certifiably crazy. # 2: Don't pick up hitchhikers, because the traveler you pick up could be a raving nutcase. So what if, on some dark, isolated road, Crazy #1 offered a ride to Nutcase #2? THE NEWTON BOYS' LAST PHOTOGRAPH - At 25 words, the shortest story I ever wrote. But it packs a wallop. THE METEOROLOGIST - Peter, a disgraced meteorologist and chronic wanderer, has traveled the country for years in his Winnebago, in search of the only thing that gives his life meaning. He's just arrived in the middle of nowhere-Hokie, Kansas-for the same purpose, but when he meets a waitress named Melanie, another sufferer, he's faced not only with his first real human contact in years, but perhaps someone who can save him. UNCONDITIONAL - A conversation between two people-devastating, tragic, and beautiful. THE PAIN OF OTHERS - Letty Dobesh, a gorgeous, degenerate thief, is fresh out of the clink and back to her old tricks-in this case, burglarizing suites at a luxury hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. But when she's surprised by returning guests on her last room of the day, she's forced to hide in the closet to avoid getting caught, and inadvertently overhears a hitman being contracted to murder the wife of a wealthy lawyer. This 60,000-word short story collection also contains a foreword by J.A. Konrath and introductions to each story by the author. BLAKE CROUCH is the author of four novels and numerous short stories, including "Serial" which he co-wrote with J.A. Konrath and has been downloaded more than 300,000 times. He lives in southwest Colorado, where he is at work on a new book. His website is www.blakecrouch.co

Healthy (ish, I did use bacon) fully loaded baked potato soup has been haunting me since I saw it on @DebinHawaii ‘s feed then immediately scampered to her blog for the recipe. I finally made it! It needed some situational tweaking because I simply can‘t get certain ingredients here in Mumbai but I have to say, for a soup that‘s extraordinarily healthy but for hubby luring bacon, this was BRILLIANT! Ha, my first Litsy inspired food!

#Litsyeats

Tamra Soup, yes! Brrrrrr I‘m going to follow suit and make a split pea with ham hocks & bacon. 😋 6y
KVanRead 👏 6y
Cinfhen Looks delicious 😋 you‘re in Mumbai??? Cool!!! 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @Tamra it‘s soup time (even if it is 28c/82f in Mumbai‘s “winter”....!!). 😊😊😊 I MISS ham, pork products are difficult to get here. I love ham.....😭 post photos so I can live vicariously!! 😊 (edited) 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen nope, HOT!! 😜😜😜😜 Yeah, Aussie expat. I‘ve been here about 13months now and can‘t say I‘m used to it yet! Probably another 20 months to go, not that I‘m counting!!! 😊😊😊 6y
DebinHawaii I am so glad you tried it and were able to make it work for you and you enjoyed it. 🎉😀I am pretty much always tweaking recipes myself. It looks great! And Dubai, wow! I eat soup in the mid-80 degree temps most of the year here but yes, when it's soup weather mid 70s-to low 80s it feels even more like soup time. 😆👍🍲 6y
Tamra @GlassAsDiamonds I love soup in any weather! 😁 But you probably have some really wonderful dal soups! I‘m jealous! 6y
GondorGirl Wait... there's a blog for all the awesome stuff @DebinHawaii eats? Tell me more... 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @DebinHawaii not only did it work but it was roundly praised by hubby who never says nice things about “healthy”!! 😊😊😊😊 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @GondorGirl She just made chocolate covers raspberries....!!!!!! Run, fast!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😱😱😊😊😊😊 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Tamra as soon as I‘ve cracked the fifty million local words for lentil and then figured out which to use in soups, I shall attempt my own. Until then... yep, we eat a lot of dal, all of it while out!!! 😊😊😊😊 6y
DebinHawaii @GlassAsDiamonds Hah! You are so sweet! 💜 @GondorGirl There's a link to my food blog in my Litsy profile. 😋😆👍 6y
Cinfhen I'm an expat myself, so I understand the countdown !!! I think just viewing EVERY day as an adventure helps!!! 6y
Tamra @GlassAsDiamonds lucky you! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen Ha!!! Love meeting other expats! 😊😊😊 I‘m trying to not count down to the exclusion of enjoying but some days.... I would really just like a steak, squishy white bread and clean drinking water! Where are you & what do you miss most? 6y
Cinfhen I‘m on year 4 out of 5, (maybe more!?!?) in Israel! I‘m lucky to live in a very Anglo neighborhood, so I‘ve made lots of friends who share a similar background. I think the culture has been a shock and simple things, like parking and ordering a pizza can raise my anxiety levels.... 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen half my brain: woah, four years in Israel. That would be tough! Other half of my brain: PIZZA! I have just found good pizza (with HAM!) after months of hunting but am sternly telling myself I cannot go eat it every day...! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Who are the “save me from ___” type of expat there? Here it‘s baby yoga students who chant in cafes and use the phrase “dear leader” without irony... 6y
Cinfhen Oh God, that would drive me INSANE!!! I actually LOVE the food here! And most of the expats I've met are awesome, it's the older Israeli's who really irk me and the people who work in the government agencies are sooooo frustrating!!! And trying to get through to schedule a dr appointment requires 5 hours and a ton of patience😬I still haven't mastered the language, so that's annoying too 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen 😊 I‘m struggling with the “surprise chili” in just about everything (tea, potato chips, roast chicken, margarita pizza...) some things do not need to be HOT!!! Trying to avoid government but sound similar - never met a bureaucracy they didn‘t like here 😭😭😭😭 (language I‘m currently not even trying with!). 6y
Cinfhen Sounds like an adventure!! I'll be thinking of you...come to Israel for a visit😁 6y

I don't know why I even pretend to start a book buying ban. Not when I discover a short story collection from Blake Crouch or after @JoeStalksBeck turned me on to Ania Ahiborn.😊😁

JoeStalksBeck Yay! Oh god that short story is excellent!! Quick and amazing read! 7y
