Motherwell | Deborah Orr
6 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
'Raw, compelling, wise and tender' Dolly Alderton 'Motherwell is razor-sharp, fearless and wonderful' Adam Kay 'Utterly unflinching and staggeringly good, both as the history of a woman and the history of a place' India Knight Just shy of 18, Deborah Orr left Motherwell - the town she both loved and hated - to go to university. It was a decision her mother railed against from the moment the idea was raised. Win had very little agency in the world, every choice was determined by the men in her life. And strangely, she wanted the same for her daughter. Attending university wasn't for the likes of the Orr family. Worse still, it would mean leaving Win behind - and Win wanted Deborah with her at all times, rather like she wanted her arm with her at all times. But while she managed to escape, Deborah's severing from her family was only superficial. She continued to travel back to Motherwell, fantasizing about the day that Win might come to accept her as good enough. Though of course it was never meant to be. MOTHERWELL is a sharp, candid and often humorous memoir about the long shadow that can be cast when the core relationship in your life compromises every effort you make to become an individual. It is about what we inherit - the good and the very bad - and how a deeper understanding of the place and people you have come from can bring you towards redemption.

Day 1. Well, I'm a complete ditz and didn't realise that Christmas Day was the first day in 'The 12 Days of Christmas.' First up, Deborah Orr's gritty memoir about growing up in North Lanarkshire in the 1970s. The tough town provides a backdrop to Orr's own difficult relationship with her mother #12Booksof2020.

Thanks to @Andrew65 for hosting.

Andrew65 Great choice, would like to read this one. 3y
readerlas @Andrew65 It really is terrific. I passed my copy onto my mum who grew up not too far from Motherwell and roughly around the same era. She definitely could relate to some sections. 3y

This was a humorous, sad and at times a difficult read. Deborah had her childhood in Motherwell, Scotland. Her relationship with her mother was certainly was up and down and plays a big part in shaping her life. It reminded me sometimes of my own childhood too. #memoirs

CarolynM I read an absolutely savage article on Boris's announcement in the Guardian this morning. How has it been received by the rest of the media (and the population)? (edited) 4y
TrishB @CarolynM terribly!! So obvious now that it‘s the economy that counts. Also reads that the new message is - it‘s your fault you didn‘t stay alert. The sensible devolved nations have not changed their message. It‘s sickening, profit over people. Basically saying we‘re doing ok as it was originally said there would be half a million deaths. I‘m so angry and sad today. 4y
CarolynM I'm sorry you're dealing with this, it is hard to believe even he can be so incompetent. I never thought I'd say this but I'm glad we have a conservative federal government at the moment because if they'd been in opposition they would NOT have been supportive of the policies that they have implemented (ironic, huh?) In Victoria we are to be allowed 5 visitors and to gather outside in groups of 10, but otherwise no change for 3 more weeks. 4y
TrishB @CarolynM and you‘ve had a corresponding low death rate. We‘ve been thrown to the lions. 4y
Cathythoughts Thanks for posting Trish 👍🏻getting it now 4y
Balibee146 😘😘😘😘 So glad to be in Scotland but devastated at the harm that's being done.Theres a very interesting video on the FB page Scientists For EU talking about the psychology of the new slogans and the strong 'nudge' systems at work.... Nudge units already used to governments a lot to influence people but this one not benign 😢😡 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts cool 👍🏻 4y
Balibee146 Oh and Motherwell is the next twon along from me 😉 this looks good... Looking forward to your thoughts.... 4y
TrishB @Balibee146 yes the new messages are certainly - it‘s all your fault if it goes wrong don‘t blames us! No leadership what so ever. 4y
TrishB @Balibee146 will let you know 👍🏻😘 4y

We were wary of the bureau, my brother and I, even though it was ours now and we could do what we liked with it.
