Girl, Woman, Other | Bernardine Evaristo

Pickpick

Day 6. This book should have won the 2019 Booker Prize outright. Evaristo weaves the stories of 12 women/non binary people, spanning the late 19th century through to contemporary times. The lack of punctuation was a little difficult to get used to but then the writing flowed.

Andrew65 Great choice. 3y

Rodham | Curtis Sittenfeld

Pickpick

Day 5. In this alternative history, Sittenfield explores what could have happened if Hilary Rodham turned down Bill Clinton's second marriage proposal. There is a lot of in depth discussion of American politics and systems which my Brit brain found a little confusing. But the character development and prose overshadows that slight niggle. #12Booksof2020

Scabby Queen | Kirstin Innes

Pickpick

Day 4. Scabby Queen. Where to start? The life of Clio Campbell takes us on a tour of Scottish political activism from the miner strikes through to the 2014 Independence Referendum. Each chapter is told from the perspective of someone who has met Clio, from a chance encounter on a train to her adopted father figure. This was one of my favourite books of 2020 - I still find myself missing Clio.

Andrew65 This one is new to me. 3y
readerlas @Andrew65 I'd definitely recommend it. One of the best books I read in 2020 (as you probably guessed!). 3y

Day 3. This had to make it into my #12Booksof2020 list. The novel takes inspiration from the real life Underground Railroad, used to help Black slaves escape the South to the sanctuary of the North. The cruelty faced by Cora, who attempts to follow in her mother's footsteps, and her community is stomach churning. A difficult read & a must for anyone wishing to broaden their knowledge of the horrors of slavery.

Andrew65 Another great Colson Whitehead book. 👏👏👏 3y
Tattooedteacher I started this and then had to let it go. Maybe it‘s time I pick it up again. 3y

Queenie | Candice Carty-Williams
Pickpick

Day 2. My friend formed a Zoom book group during lockdown and this was one of our reads. Queenie is a young Black woman, working as a journalist in London. We travel with her as she navigates sex, relationships, mental health and the casual micro (and not so micro) racism she experiences every day.

Motherwell | Deborah Orr

Pickpick

Day 1. Well, I'm a complete ditz and didn't realise that Christmas Day was the first day in 'The 12 Days of Christmas.' First up, Deborah Orr's gritty memoir about growing up in North Lanarkshire in the 1970s. The tough town provides a backdrop to Orr's own difficult relationship with her mother #12Booksof2020.

Andrew65 Great choice, would like to read this one. 3y
readerlas @Andrew65 It really is terrific. I passed my copy onto my mum who grew up not too far from Motherwell and roughly around the same era. She definitely could relate to some sections. 3y

This is my first post on here so hope I get it right! I have been thinking of reading challenges for #2021 and decided to read the Booker Prize shortlist from the year I was born. The Bone People was the winner (do you know which year it without Googling?) so I intend to kick off my reading year with this. What are your reading challenges for 2021?

BarbaraBB Welcome to Litsy! I loved Bone People and am participating in way too many reading challenges but I can‘t resist them 🤷🏻‍♀️😀 3y
readerlas @BarbaraBB Thank you! That's good to hear about The Bone People. Used to love a good reading challenge but then had children, haha! 3y
vivastory Welcome to Litsy! I'm not currently planning any challenges, aside from following along with the shortlist for a few book prizes 3y
readerlas @vivastory Shortlists are always interesting to look at. Good luck with your chosen challenges! 3y
