Mehso-so

Despite many great quotes mostly from the epilogue, this book about the Holocaust AND Armenian Genocide was a bit of a muddle. The author listed largely unknown issues, events, and people in a commentary at the end of the book. It seems the author wanted to cover all of these, resulting in a long difficult-to-follow/understand plot. I accepted that I‘d be confused thruout and finished it anyway. #readingeurope2020 #turkey #litsyatoz #lettere

“The secrets are buried in the Vatican. Twenty years ago, the Vatican opened the Inquisition archives from the 16th century. We probably have only four hundred years to wait until the WWII archives are opened.”

Lcsmcat Yet they announced this week that they are now open. 4y
GingerAntics @Lcsmcat they‘ve opened the WWII archives? I thought there was a 100 year wait to protect those involved. 4y
Lcsmcat @GingerAntics They have. I heard it on NPR, but here‘s a link to the Vatican‘s press release: https://www.vaticannews.va/en/vatican-city/news/2020-03/holy-see-archives-pope-p... 4y

Texreader @Lcsmcat @gingerantics Holy moly! Guess my post was almost timely! 😊 4y
Lcsmcat @Texreader Indeed! 🙂 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader @Lcsmcat I‘m glad they‘ve made some digital. Usually when they open to scholars you have to apply and they can reject your request to see records if they don‘t like things you‘ve said about the church in the past or if they think you‘ll say bad things about them after your visit. It‘s pretty sketchy. 4y

GingerAntics Wow, that‘s powerful. This is a view of the Holocaust we need these days. 4y
CMB My heart...weeps...upon reading this...but I added the book to my list...😞 4y
Texreader @olivia.ferz @crazeedi @megabooks @GingerAntics @cmb Unfortunately I can‘t recommend this book. These great quotes are from the epilogue and author‘s commentary at the end. The book itself tries to cover too much and it all becomes a lengthy muddled confusing mess. It‘s a shame because he‘s a very talented writer with an extremely important message. I would have preferred he broke out the topics he wanted to cover in separate books. 4y
Crazeedi @Texreader thank you for your review, there are other books out there worth reading 4y
GingerAntics That‘s unfortunate. 4y

I love this, encouragement to a Holocaust survivor to write about his experience, to bear witness to what happened at Auschwitz: “It‘s not the facts that get through to people, it‘s getting to their humanity. Give me your words and we‘ll burn people‘s hearts with them.”

Around the time this book was set, The Hobbit would have just been published if I remember my Tolkien biography correctly.

“Years ago, a kind psychologist told me it would help to write about my experiences. I‘d kept a rather scattered diary since. When I couldn‘t write, I read. That was my only indulgence, buying books. Books in Hebrew, in English, even in German.”

Aren‘t we all, here on Litsy, engaging in a form of therapy when we read?

GingerAntics I agree with that whole heartedly. Reading is great therapy. 4y
