Drive-Thru Dreams: A Journey Through the Heart of America's Fast-Food Kingdom | Adam Chandler
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Most any honest person can own up to harboring at least one fast-food guilty pleasure. In Drive-Thru Dreams, Adam Chandler explores the inseparable link between fast food and American life for the past century. The dark underbelly of the industrys largest players has long been scrutinized and gutted, characterized as impersonal, greedy, corporate, and worse. But, in unexpected ways, fast food is also deeply personal and emblematic of a larger than life image of America. With wit and nuance, Chandler reveals the complexities of this industry through heartfelt anecdotes and fascinating trivia as well as interviews with fans, executives, and workers. He traces the industry from its roots in Wichita, where White Castle became the first fast food chain in 1921 and successfully branded the hamburger as the official all-American meal, to a teenager's 2017 plea for a years supply of Wendys chicken nuggets, which united the internet to generate the most viral tweet of all time. Drive-Thru Dreams by Adam Chandler tells an intimate and contemporary story of Americaits humble beginning, its innovations and failures, its international charisma, and its regional identitiesthrough its beloved roadside fare.

I enjoyed this book and learned quite a bit. The writing is okay but nothing too remarkable. If you‘re curious about the history of fast food establishments or if you want an easy non-fiction book I‘d recommend checking it out.

A quick, fun look at fast food in America and abroad. So many books are negative about fast food, but Chandler takes a look at the history behind brands like White Castle and DQ and how they shaped American leisure and dining. He looks at the current landscape and compares traditional fast food with fast casual chains like Panera and Chipotle. The most fun was his look at outposts of American fast food abroad. #BorrowNotBuy

mabell My husband and I have a tradition of trying McDonalds in each country we visit. 😄 It‘s fun to see and taste the local additions! Lamb burgers in New Zealand, Croquettes in Spain, etc. 13mo
Cinfhen Sounds like a fun listen 🎧 13mo

Megabooks @mabell that‘s fun!! I enjoyed pizza at McDonald‘s in Canada in the 90s. It was better than Pizza Hut! 13mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was. Short and easy. 👍🏻 13mo
mabell @Cinfhen It is a lot of fun! 13mo
mabell @Megabooks Oh cool! Pizza would have been a unique one to try! 13mo
vivastory It's crazy how expensive some of the fast casual chains are now (esp Chipotle) 13mo
Megabooks @vivastory yes, and the nutrition is arguably not a whole lot better either. The author posits the main difference between fast food and fast casual is the price point. And for me as a celiac there is more available and less cross contamination at fast casual. I‘m planning on getting C for dinner and my usual order is $10.50! (And it‘s a bit cheaper here than in cities.) 13mo

1940 or 2020? 🤔

Learning to live in public in the post-pandemic world is probably going to look a great deal like living in the aftermath of a world war. How will we handle it?
