Ashes of Fiery Weather
Ashes of Fiery Weather | Kathleen Donohoe
15 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
A debut novel about the passionate loves and tragic losses of six generations of women in a family of firefighters, spanning from famine-era Ireland to Brooklyn a decade after 9/11 "There isnt anything in the world that hurts like a burn. No one knows the pain of a fire more than the women of the Keegan/OReilly clan. Kathleen Donohoes stunning debut novel brings to life seven unsentimental, wry, and evocative portraits of women from a family of firefighters. When we meet Norah the first member of her family to move from Ireland to New York she is a mother of three, contemplating her husbands casket as his men give him a full firemans funeral, and faced with a terrible choice. Norah's mother-in-law, Delia, is stoic and self-preserving. Her early losses have made her keep her children close and her secrets closer. Eileen, Delias daughter, adopted from Ireland and tough-as-nails, yet desperate for a sense of belonging, is one of the first women firefighters in New York. It is through her eyes that we experience 9/11, blindsided by the events of that terrible day along with her. Poignant, wise, and immersive, Ashes of Fiery Weather is a tour de force in the tradition of Let the Great World Spin, one that explores the emotional wounds and ultimate resilience of those drawn to fire, as well as the many ways we search for each other, and the many ways we hope to be rescued.

I can't force myself through this one. It's not bad, I just found it boring. I didn't care about anyone. And life's too short and there are too many other books to read to force myself through it!

I'm giving this book one more character perspective to see if I like it. Norah didn't really do anything for me, but it wasn't bad. I'm just ambivalent. Onto Chapter 2 to see if I like it more!

Hoping that this book picks up. I'm on page 37 and not really feeling it so far. Any Littens finish it and think it's worth powering through?

cariashley I hope it picks up for you!! It's on my TBR, I come from a family of NY firefighters so it's basically compulsory that I read it, but I want it to be good! 7y
maximoffs @cariashley I'm going to give it until the end of the first chapter (68 pages), that's my typical DNF mark. I also did just finish a phenomenal book so that could be why. I hope you enjoy it though! 7y
EvieBee I returned it to the library after the first chapter unfortunately. I think my brain wast feeling it a this point. I will definitely get back to it. 7y
BittersweetBooks I loved this one!! One of my favorites of the year. Hope you stick with it and that you enjoy it more soon!! 7y

I can't track down my Kindle at the moment so I'm starting on this ARC. Beyond excited!

PS: isn't this TBR sticker so cool? I'm helping Litsy by beta testing the new updates before they come out. Let me know if you're interested in helping out by testing and reporting anything weird :)

Karkar Awesome! I would totally help. 7y
maximoffs @Karkar awesome! Shoot an email to ashley@litsy.com :) She'll help you from there! 7y

Character is one of the most significant aspects of a novel for me as a reader. Kathleen Donohoe does it up right in this gripping debut of six generations of firefighters' families. Such a terrific read so far. #debut #librarylove @hmhbooks

5⭐️ This is a fantastic book with a big cast of characters, all of which are beautifully drawn and heartbreakingly human. Digging into several generations of a fire fighting family, the book jumps in time and to different narrators but that enhances the story rather than be distracting. The accounts of bravery in the line of duty and especially of 9/11 are startling in their accuracy. I was flying though pages to follow this family. Read now.

SO excited! I didn't think I would get approved for this e-galley from netgalley, but I did! This is my #tbrtuesday a little early. I love firefighter stories the same way I love cop, doctor, paramedic, and lawyer stories; this is jumping to the top of my TBR list once I finish The Kept Woman.

Suzze Oh, I'm glad you got it! It'll be nice to compare notes. 😀 8y

Multi-generational story Irish American women in a NYC firefighting family. I liked the story and the characters. Lots of skipping between time periods (which I like).

bookishkai Oh, this looks so good, and right up my alley. I love firefighter stories. 8y
