The Slaughterman's Daughter
The Slaughterman's Daughter: The Avenging of Mende Speismann by the Hand of her Sister Fanny | Yaniv Iczkovits
17 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
The townsfolk of Motal, a small town in the Pale of Settlement where nothing extraordinary ever happens, are shocked when Fanny Keismann - devoted wife, mother of five and celebrated cheese farmer - leaves her home at two hours past midnight and vanishes into the night. True, the husbands of Motal have been vanishing for years, but a wife and mother? Whoever heard of such a thing. What on earth possessed her? Could it have anything to do with Fanny's missing brother-in-law, who left her sister almost a year ago and ran away to Minsk, abandoning his family to destitution and despair? Or could Fanny have been lured away by Zizek Breshov, the mysterious ferryman on the Yaselda river, who, in a strange twist of events, seems to have disappeared on the same night? Surely there can be no link between Fanny and the peculiar roadside murder on the way to Telekhany, which has left Colonel Piotr Novak, head of the Russian secret police, scratching his head. Surely that could have nothing to do with Fanny Keismann, whatever her past, whatever her reputation as a wilde chayeh, a wild beast . . . Surely not.

I did judge this book by its cover, and for once I did right by it. It's not one of those books you're immediately hooked, but more like a slow-burn that draws you in more and more until you can't get enough. At least it was like this for me. I loved the combination of Historical Novel and Jewish life. I think I've learned a lot from reading this one. It's rather slow-paced, but when you think about it, traveling in 1890 wasn't that fast either.

charl08 Love this cover, so much better than the one I had! 1mo
Jari-chan @charl08 I don't really know what the English version looks like, but at least the content stays the same 😅 1mo
Jari-chan @charl08 Agree. I'm not sure I would've picked up the English book. 1mo

Oh wow, this one caught me off guard. Blurb and beginning hooked me. Then the story switched gears in it's character focus and I wasn't sure I liked where it was going. Just as it felt like a saggy middle book, the style clicked and every prior segue suddenly served a purpose. The ending delivered. This book requires your full attention, it's definitely not a fluff book, but it's so worth the effort.

DrexEdit Intriguing! Stacked! 😊 3y
Crazeedi I started this one a few months ago, from net galley, never finished 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Great engaging read - recommended if you enjoy historical novels. Especially if you like the longer ones (500+ pages)

... it could not be clearer to me that they see in you their worst traits... The Polish peasant believes that he is far more just and generous than he really is, while the Russian aristocrat thinks of himself as brave and stately... Neither of them would ever admit that they too suffer from fear and loneliness and alienation and greed and lust. ....The paradox of it all is that they hate in you the very same things that keep haunting them.

rockpools Looks good! 3y
charl08 @rockpools it took a while to get going, but I'm now hooked. 3y

It felt like reading a Jewish version of True Grit set in Russia. Strong characters, unusual story. Weird but in a good way ;). I enjoyed it!

charl08 I have this in the stack: looking forward to it. 3y

This is a very strange, very compelling book. I haven't read anything like it really, it's like a combination of Fiddler on the roof, Tolstoy told by the Coens.

Time for the controversial post of the month.... cover art! This month I might have included 4 or 5 rather than 15!

Got a favourite?

MsMelissa I‘m indifferent to pretty much all of the featured covers. But my idea of a nice cover generally differs from lists such as this. 3y
rockpools I do like the paint one. But I‘m kind of sad The Rain Heron didn‘t keep it‘s original AUS/UK (not sure - I read the ARC) one, because that was BEAUTIFUL! 3y
Mitch @rockpools yeah - I‘d love to be a fly on the wall when some of those decisions are made 3y
Mitch @MsMelissa agreed. I look every month and generally am underwhelmed! 🤣 3y

shortsarahrose I think @emz711 was just commenting about how there are a lot of books out right now with titles like “___er‘s daughter.” Not that it is part of a series. 3y
