Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel
Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel | Alexandria Miracola
90 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
In a home nestled on a quiet, cobblestone street, a young girl is holding tightly to wonder.
Penelope Grace is looking out the window, breathing in the stillness of snow falling. Christmas is coming, and as she lovingly places each candle on the windowsills, warmth and light transform her family's home.
She settles in by the fireside with her family, welcoming you to join them, as Great Uncle Alex challenges anyone present to uncover the secret of his magic tricks.
The mystery, as always, remains, yet everyone is content. All is quiet and good, as it should be.
But as the holiday approaches, Penelope learns how easily circumstance can mock joy. A nameless shadow is haunting her family, and there seems to be no hope of defending them against his relentless attacks.
Still, Penelope Grace is not content to stand by and do nothing, and so, on a cold winter's night, she finds herself chasing an unexpected friend through the snow.
But which will prove stronger?
Shadow or Light? Despair or wonder?
Follow her now through an ice-laden forest, down a worn, frozen path, to a winter carousel covered in snow.
Do you suppose that you will find the answers there?

I'm so excited to be part of Shepherd, a website for readers that features authors, their books, & books they love!

I created a list of the best fantasy books to reignite your sense of wonder (after all, that‘s what Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel is all about )

It would mean so much to me if you would check out the list! Some of my very favorite books are featured & it was so fun to share more about why these stories are important to me.

Part Three: Apricity is so special to me 🕯

When I was thinking of the 3 parts of the story, Christmas & Winter came instantly.

But I knew that God was leading me to something a little extra special for the final part.

I Googled words related to winter & God brought me to an article featuring a word that is now obsolete (or was, until I wrote Penelope Grace!)

Apricity means... Head on over to my blog to find out 😊 (link in comments)

"Fighting for Me" by Riley Clemmons is one of the songs that inspired me while I was writing Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel, especially once I got to Part Two: Winter ❄

Winter is a dark time of year for most and it's a season that many dread.

But I have seen God show up for me and my family on the darkest of winter nights, radiant in all His power and glory, & I wanted to write a story that celebrated His faithfulness in dark times.

⬇️

wordslinger42 Whether winter is a season you love or one you strive to get through, I hope that Penelope Grace's adventures through the world of Ellura shed a little warmth and light for you 💙

Today is the last day of my Etsy sale! Everything is on sale, including Penelope Grace, and you'll get 20% off your order of $20 or more 😊

And if you've read the story, will you please leave a review on Goodreads and StoryGraph? Thank you so much!

Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel is a winter tale told in 3 parts 🎄❄🕯

Part One: Christmas begins just as the holiday season is starting. I chose to start there for 2 reasons.

First, my mom loves Christmastime, & the story is inspired by her, so I wanted to fill it with things she loves!

I also chose it because the holidays, which are meant to be so full of light & hope, often feel dark for those who are suffering loss & loneliness.

⬇️

wordslinger42 My family knows the joy and sadness that can come with this time of year, and I wanted to write a story that acknowledges both.

Whatever your holiday season looks like this year, I hope this story inspires and encourages you in the midst of it ❤

Delightful! A cozy winter read with a very uplifting message! Lots of picturesque, wintery imagery. A well-written protagonist with normal human flaws. I especially enjoyed the Princess-Bride-eqsue asides where the narrator directly addresses the reader. It makes it feel more like you're listening to a story someone is telling, rather than reading a book. Looking forward to the next book in the Chronicles of Wonder series. Recommend!

A friend of mine challenged me to do a writerly intro, so here goes 😊

🐉 What I write: Christian fantasy! But I also want to write a story about my grandma growing up in Madison, WV, and I'd love to write fairy tale retellings!

📚 Go-to genre I read/write: Fantasy. The more dragons, the better

⚔ My favorite type of characters: The ones who find their limits, who come to the end of themselves and realize it's not up to them to save the day.
⬇️

wordslinger42 🏰 Happyily Ever Afters or not: Yes, but they don't come easily or for everyone

🗓 Plotter or Plantser: Plantser 😅 Sometimes, I write very quickly with no planning, but it can help to outline my ideas

✒ My writing tools: Pen and a journal

🐲🗡🎨 When you read my stories you can expect: Fantastical creatures, adventure, and whimsical illustrations

⬇️
3y
wordslinger42 📖 My publishing goals: I have my own publishing company, 21:25 Books. I'm releasing my next book this spring and hope to start working with other authors soon!

Sometimes, it takes the words of family and friends to remind us of what wonder truly is.

For Penelope Grace, it‘s taken the child-like faith of a beloved uncle, the patience of a wolf led by grace and the Wind, and the fierceness of a bold arctic fox.

When you‘ve finished this winter tale of wonder, find the people who remind you of what wonder is and thank them.

They are more precious than we‘ll ever know.

Are the heroes of our stories really the ones who save the day?

Penelope Grace must fight against Denagon if she hopes to save the land of Ellura and her own family.

She is all warmth and wonder, while he embodies everything dark and cruel.

The task seems hopeless and her strength insufficient.

So, tell me... do you think Penelope Grace has the strength to overcome him on her own?

Have you ever longed to escape to a winter world of wonder?

On a cold night, many months ago, I opened a small music box, given to me by my grandmother when I was a little girl.

This quote is, hands-down, my absolute favorite.

These words are where the whole story began.

They perfectly sum up my mom, Penelope, the most courageous woman of wonder I'll ever know, and they show the delight it gave my grandpa, John, to have her for his daughter.

All that I love and admire most about my family is wrapped up in these words.

God used them to spark a desire for wonder in my heart. I hope He does the same for you.

Do you want to see Light illuminate darkness?

Do you want to see wonder sweep away the chill from even the most bitter days?

After a devastating loss, Penelope Grace longs for nothing more, but a persistent shadow clings to her family, draining them of hope and the desire to fight.

Desperately, she tries to revive their sense of wonder, until, on the bleakest of nights, she is robbed of all she holds dear.

⬇️

wordslinger42 Yet, hope isn't lost, and Penelope Grace finds herself following an unexpected friend through the freshly fallen snow, hoping for the restoration of all she has lost.

But the fight for wonder is just beginning, and the battle promises to grow more dark and fierce.

So, the question remains...

Will Penelope Grace hold onto wonder? Will she help those she loves do the same?

And what of you, dear reader?

⬇️
3y
wordslinger42 When wonder is slipping through your fingers & the nights are cold & dark, will you allow despair to claim you?

Or will you see the glimmer of the sun on the snow & begin to understand how winter can be the springtime of the soul, if only you'll let it?

The answers await you under snow-laden boughs, on a winter carousel, covered in snow.

I'll meet you there ❄🎠

Do you feel like living in wonder today?

If I'm honest, I don't.

But I'm learning that we need wonder the most when we least feel like experiencing it.

We need wonder most at the exact moment when it seems most foolish or impossible.

We need wonder when others might label it unrealistic or childish.

Wonder isn't childish.

Wonder is child-like.

⬇️

wordslinger42 Wonder is an expression of faith in our Father & King, the Creator who can bring hope to the bleak, peace to the broken, & light to our darkest days.

Writing this book & seeing my mom, Penelope, live out a legacy of wonder each & every day, reminds me of how essential wonder is to our hearts & lives.

I pray that reading the story offers you the very same reminder & encouragement. If you'd like to receive a manuscript copy, please let me know!

Why do I write?

Well... I'm a sucker for a good journal ?

Now, for the real story! ?

I've always loved stories, and God planted the desire to write my own at a young age.

But it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I realized why I write.

God led me to John 21:25: "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

⬇️

wordslinger42 Doesn't that verse give you the best kind of chills? 💙

I want to write books that glorify Him and that tell about the good things He does. I want to help other writers do the same one day.

And how incredible to think that, even if I and all my writer friends wrote to the end of our days about Him, we could never reach the end of His goodness or run out of words to praise the wonder of Who He is.

What about you? Why do you write?

Time to describe my book, Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel, in just 5 words (wish me luck 😂)

❄ Wondrous

❄ Whimsical

🎠 Child-like

❄ Fantasy

❄ Family

This story was inspired by & written for my mom, Penelope Grace, who so perfectly embodies wonder & whimsy, child-like faith, loyalty to family, & a love for the fantastic, the things deemed impossible by logical standards.

It was my greatest joy to write a story in honor of her ❄🎠

Who are my readers?

This is really the question that sums up why I write in the first place.

My readers are those who are young at heart or those who are longing to be young at heart once again.

My readers are the people who recognize that something is missing and aren't content to let it stay lost.

What genre do I write in? I'll give you one guess 😉

🐉When you open a fantasy novel, it restores your ability to believe, to wonder. It reignites your passion for the exciting, the bold, the adventurous, the brave.

🐉 When you step inside a Christian fantasy world, like Ellura, it reminds of the peace you hold because, at the end of the day, Jesus is the hero of the story, not you. He carries the burden and He makes a miraculous way.

⬇️

wordslinger42 🐉No matter your age, fantasy makes you young at heart, willing to embrace the childlike & the impossible once more.

And I think we all need a bit more of that, don't we?

What is your favorite genre & why? What genre do you write? I'd love to hear the story of what inspired you to start writing!

And if you'd like to explore Ellura for yourself, I know of a winter carousel that can take you there ❄🎠 (comment or follow the link in my bio)

Have you ever longed for wonder when it felt impossible?

I started writing Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel at a time when everything about my family's circumstances screamed that wonder was foolish.

But wonder was something I craved, and it was something I'd watched my mother, Penelope, embrace all my life.

And so Penelope Grace and the Winter Carousel was born, a story about defiant wonder and the fight to hold tightly to it.

⬇️

wordslinger42 What helps you hold tightly to wonder? What is the story behind your book's title?

I've been really blessed by the reading/writing community I've found on IG the last few months, so I did an intro post there! I know my Litsy family already knows me 😅, but I thought I'd share it here, too!

📚 I'm Alexandria, founder of 21:25 Books, a Christian publishing company!

📚 Two years ago, I read John 21:25 & knew God wanted me to start a publishing company that would be a home for writers & stories about Him & ⬇️

wordslinger42 ... all the good and wondrous things He does!

📚 I'm all about wonder and celebrating the child-like (Matt. 11:25)

📚 I love a cozy writing space (the more white lights, the better!)

You can follow along on my writing journey on my blog (link in bio), where a winter tale of wonder is currently being told ❄🎠

Are any other Littens writers?! I'd love to know more about your work, if so!

idealityandme I also write...but have so many incomplete books haha. 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme What kind of books do you write? 😊 Haha I understand the struggle! I've been sitting on the one I'm working on now for about 10 years 😅 But I'm determined to finish it this year! 3y

idealityandme Yeah I have a 14 year old one hahaha! I get it! I write all kinds of fiction. My main focus is a fantasy right now but I have 4 other ones stewing including a biblical fiction, a fairytale, and a western romance, and a contemporary sci-fi. My goal is to provide more wholesome literature in the market that doesn't suck. Especially for YA and teens! 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme I want to read all of yours just based on the genres 😅 Fantasy is my favorite! And yes, more wholesom fiction!! That's want I want do as well 😊 Last year, I started my publishing company, 21:25 Books (based on John 21:25, NIV verson), and I'm just publishing my own stuff right now, but hoping God makes a way for me to publish other writers soon and get some good books out there! 💜 3y
idealityandme I think that's great! The world needs more of that these days:) I mean you can definitely read my 1st chapter of my fantasy (I need some unbiased opinions and editing) once I deem it good enough for human eyes haha. The first chapter is always the hardest for me to write! The first chapter has to be 👌 that's the rule haha 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme Thank you! And yes, I would love to help you!! 😊 Let me know when you're ready for me to read it! Haha I'm also picky about my first chapters 😅 3y
idealityandme I think once I figure out the best route from point A to point B in the story....then it will go more smoothly. Haha I have rewritten the first chapter 6 different ways and I'm not satisfied yet. Where to begin haha that is the question. What genres do you write? 3y
wordslinger42 I agree that that will help!! Haha I've done the same thing with mine actually! I think I've finally settled on how it's meant to be... maybe 😅 I write Christian fantasy! I've done children's and young adult, and I'm working on an adult fantasy novel now! I also have some fairytale retellings in mind, but I haven't started any of them yet! 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme Forgot to tag you 😂 3y
idealityandme So very similar genres to me then! That's awesome! They are the best kind!😂 Its really hard to be the sole decision maker and map it all out in your head. 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme They really are!! Not biased at all 🤣 I know, it is hard! I've never really plotted my stories ojt beforehand, but I've been doing a whole lot of praying & planning with my current project, and it's actually helping a lot! 3y
idealityandme Praying is a good idea. I have pregnancy brain right now and I need all the help I can get! 😂 Makes everything harder! 3y
wordslinger42 @idealityandme Congratulations on the baby!! 💜 I can imagine that makes story plotting harder than it already is 😅😅 3y
