Mudlark (/'mAdla;k/) noun A person who scavenges for usable debris in the mud of a river or harbourLara Maiklem has scoured the banks of the Thames for over fifteen years, in pursuit of the objects that the river unearths: from Neolithic flints to Roman hair pins, medieval buckles to Tudor buttons, Georgian clay pipes to Victorian toys. These objects tell her about London and its lost ways of life. Moving from the river's tidal origins in the west of the city to the point where it meets the sea in the east, Mudlarking is a search for urban solitude and history on the River Thames, what Lara calls 'the longest archaeological site in the world'.

The tagged one is my favourite so far.

“The Midnight Library“ and “The Food of Love“ are at the bottom of my list and I don't recommend them. The former is written well but it's fantasy so not my kind of book and the latter one is written badly and it's not engaging at all, quite the opposite!

I fell in love with this book. The author Lara Maiklem is so passionate that it feels like you're walking with her along the river while together you find treasures from the past. I was reading it very slowly because I didn't want it to finish but I didn't only read it, I felt it.
#2019 #19822022 @Librarybelle a book in your "wheelhouse" ?

Librarybelle Haha…now you have a new term to remember! 😂 This sounds fantastic, and I am so glad you enjoyed it! 2y
julesG Mudlarking is fun. And I'm wondering why I took this book off my TBR 🤔 2y
Dodi @Librarybelle Yes and I'm looking forward to learning many more! 😁 @julesG The important thing is that it's now back in it! 😅 2y

julieclair This book sounds fascinating! Added to my TBR stack. 2y
julieclair @julesG Sounds like you may have actually done some mudlarking? I have never even heard the term before. 2y
julesG Yes, took my kids down to the Thames one time we were in London. We didn't find treasures. Part of a clay pipe. 2y

6am Sunday morning... LOVING this book 😍

#mudlarking #19822022 #2019

Magpiegem I love this book too!! Do you mudlark? X 2y
Dodi @Magpiegem Sadly, not. I've always lived near the river in London and hadn't heard about this until only a few weeks ago. Where I live now the river foreshore is inaccessible unfortunately. It's all so fascinating! Do you live closeby to a place where larking is possible? x 2y
Magpiegem I‘m from London and I think my fascination started because my dad (a builder) used to come home with pottery and prehistoric sharks teeth when he was digging up foundations on what used to be the bank of the Thames hundreds or thousands of years ago. I live in Brighton now and there are rivers near by to lark. But I‘m a treasure hunter where ever I go, shore lines, Victorian dumps… I love an old bottle 😄 xx 2y

Librarybelle This sounds fascinating! I‘m in the US, but books like these are in my wheelhouse! 2y
Dodi @Magpiegem Ahh, it sounds so cool! What are the Victorian dumps? 😅 Is it easy to find things on the beach in Brighton? When I was young I was encouraged to throw away everything that was old but now I'm starting to be attracted by all of this!! 😍 2y
Dodi @Librarybelle What's a “wheelhouse“? 🤓 This book is triggering lots of emotions for me...😊 2y
Dodi @Magpiegem If you happen to be in London let me know and we can have a coffee together near the Thames! 🙂 xx 2y
Magpiegem @Dodi “in your wheelhouse” means it‘s your cup of tea 😊 2y
Dodi @Magpiegem Ahhhhh, hahah, thank you so much, I had looked on Google what “wheelhouse“ meant but I was confused. 😅 x 2y
Magpiegem @Dodi that would be lovely, thank you 😊 there are old dumps all over the place. You often find small ones on country walks on the other side of the path from old cottages, you‘ll see an old bottle or something else sticking out of the mud. People used to dump there glass rubbish etc in one spot and now I think it‘s treasure 😂 we stayed in a cottage on a river in Devon last summer and on the riverbank I found tons of old jars and bottles xx 2y
Dodi @Magpiegem How interesting, it sounds like travelling back in time! For free! 😂 xx 2y
Librarybelle Thanks for helping out @Magpiegem ! Sorry, @Dodi …I‘m interested in these types of books! 😁 2y
Dodi @Librarybelle No need to apologise ☺️ in fact, I love to learn English sayings... I was picturing a house with wheels 🤣 🤣 2y

A deeply fascinating dive into the objects that can be found along the foreshore of the Thames, with a heavy sprinkle of London history. Loved it.

2021 no. 3- I loved this book. I found it absolutely fascinating. Maiklem is a river bed treasure hunter (a mudlark) and takes you on a journey along the Thames, linking its long history to the weird and wonderful artifacts she has found there. I learnt so much and will definitely listen to this again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

mandarchy We actually have a mud bay where I live and a liberal arts school which led me to think from the title that it was about a race we have here. At low tide after graduation people run naked across the bay. It's a fine tradition! 3y

I can‘t listen to The Immortalist anymore. I got to the end of Clara‘s story and I needed a break. The world seems too bleak this week already. So I‘m listening to this instead. I‘m a beach “treasure” finder but I would love to be a mudlark.

@Mitch Thank you so much for everything in my #bestof2020 swap package - you have NO idea as to how many times I've picked up/put down the tagged book 😂! The other 2 sound good too, I ❤ the bookmark, & I'm sure the 🍫 won't last long! And I can't wait for my area to come out of tier 4 so I can have some friends round for 🐱 bingo! @candority

The Mudlark is a peculiarly London institution- a person who collects historical items both mundane and valuable from the river Thames, from coins to pins, gold to printers fonts. The author is someone who pursued the hobby for many years and introduces us to the locations of the river, the items which can be found there and the lore associated with each location. A good read, especially if you are in anyway familiar with London or the Thames.

Bk8 of my #MarchBookHaul & #BirthdayBookHaul (yes I know I‘m just adding to my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom but it makes me happy in a world gone mad) is this NF about the treasures found in the tidal mud of the Thames River in London. I‘ve always been a history buff, it was one of my fave subjects in school & I‘m envious & fascinated by the relics of it found in countries like England that are so much older than Australia. Can‘t wait to read this.👍

LeeRHarry Heard good things about this one. 😊 How are you going Liz? 4y
Lizpixie @LeeRHarry I‘m doing ok Lee, quarantine is pretty much my daily for a few years now, though not seeing my kids is hard. Just got the flu shot & pneumonia shot so hopefully winter will be uneventful🤞Hows things in Melbourne? 4y
LeeRHarry @Lizpixie not too bad Liz - still working; one week at home, one in the lab - and outside it‘s hailing - winter has started early! Take care 💕 4y

Sometimes a book presents itself at just the right time. Having to remain housebound, this book transports you to various locations along the Thames in London where mudlark Lara Maiklem unearths treasures and describes their intricacies, beauty and histories. We seamlessly move from the modern day riverbank to distinct historic periods and back again. Lara Maiklem's narration is sublime: a calm, reassuring voice.

A super chilled relaxing book about one woman‘s search through the mud and muck on the banks of the Thames for any item of interest. I completely loved this book, read my full review here : https://thecuriousmagpie2018.wordpress.com/2019/10/22/audiobook-mudlarking-by-la...

We used to do this as kids! Love the idea of finding treasures amongst the tires and shipping trolleys! Some things never get old!
