I still haven‘t read The Sun Also Rises... I‘ve read and really liked two other Hemingway novels despite myself, since I didn‘t think I liked Hemingway the guy very much.

This book, about Hemingway‘s life at the time he wrote The Sun Also Rises, as well as his relationships with the people he wrote in to that book, is well-written and full of fascinating tidbits.

I‘m sure now I, though: he was a great writer, but I don‘t like the guy.

Did you know that Hemingway‘s breakthrough novel The Sun Also Rises was edited in part by Fitzgerald? Or that his dementia was perhaps caused by using his head to escape from a plane? There‘s plenty of tidbits about the pre WW2 era when decadence, poverty and war again were in the air in Europe. It‘s a real portrait of the artist as a young man, an arrogant, amorous & adventurous middle-aged man & then an old one who dies not by the sea.

The tagged book is great, and I really enjoyed The Paris Wife, but the cover always irritates me! The fashion on the cover seems totally wrong for the era! 🤷‍♀️

I love learning about Hemingway's life! He's such a fascinating man. He certainly wasn't perfect, he was human. This book focuses on his relationships and how he portrayed his friends in The Sun Also Rises. Good audiobook too! 🎧🥃✒️ #NonFictionChallenge17

Ernest Hemingway to use his own language was a Son of a Bitch. Imagine going away with a group of friends to an exotic location where no one can know you and you cut lose misbehave and be wild and then having one of your friends writes a classic novel in which you are all barely concealed characters and all of your behaviour is laid bare before the world for generations to come. Hemingway was the friend and the Sun Also Rises is the novel.

A perfect Sunday morning finishing up this gem while enjoying tea and a paczki! I absolutely love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone obsessed with Hemingway. It provided a lot of fun and exciting insight into his life while he was writing The Sun Also Rises. ♡

There could not possibly be a book that's more me. It's like it was written with all my specific interests in mind. Endlessly fascinating. ☀️

Loved it! So saturated with wonderful historical accounts of Hemingway and the Parisian expatriates of the 1920s. Beautiful and well researched.

A hilarious and thorough look at the years preceding the publication of The Sun Also Rises. This book is brimming with bizarre Hemingway stories I'll want to pester people with for weeks.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in 1920's American literary culture. It's not as vibrant as A Moveable Feast (and if you love Hemingway the man or the icon, best stay away), but it is a complete picture of the creation of The Sun Also Rises.

Chapter one: Paris is a Bitch

Started this today. Though I did not like The Sun Also Rises (I know, I know), I do love reading about the literary culture of 1920s Paris (Hemingway's A Moveable Feast is a particular favorite). Only a couple of chapters in, my hopes are high.

This book is probably better enjoyed with a martini, but coffee will certainly do. I know there's a lot about Hemingway about there, but I learned many things about him here. Plus, Paris! "Everybody behaves badly...Give them the proper chance." -Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises
