Summerlong | Peter S Beagle
Beloved author Peter S. Beagle ("The Last Unicorn") returns with this long-anticipated new novel, a beautifully bittersweet tale of passion, enchantment, and the nature of fate. It was a typically unpleasant Puget Sound winter before the arrival of Lioness Lazos. An enigmatic young waitress with strange abilities, when the lovely Lioness comes to Gardner Island even the weather takes notice. As an impossibly beautiful spring leads into a perfect summer, Lioness is drawn to a complicated family. She is taken in by two disenchanted loversdynamic Joanna Delvecchio and scholarly Abe Aronson visited by Joanna s previously unlucky-in-love daughter, Lily. With Lioness in their lives, they are suddenly compelled to explore their deepest dreams and desires. Lioness grows more captivating as the days grow longer. Her new family thrives, even as they may be growing apart. But lingering in Lioness s past is a dark secret and even summer days must pass. "

I thought this would be a little more romantic, and it definitely wasn't that. I knew that it was a Persephone story before I read it, so the "twist" wasn't a surprise, but the foreshadowing is cleverly interwoven.
The writing is good, so I recommend it.

Unfortunately...I just couldn't keep going with this book. I thought maybe it was just a slow build but it never managed to capture my attention and there are so many other things I can be reading! It makes me sad though because I enjoyed so many of his other works. Maybe I'll try again in the future.

I finally got some wrapping paper for the #summersantagoespostal swap! I also received another book today in the mail — which my match *just* said she finished reading. D‘oh! 🤦‍♀️ The dangers of swapping are REAL! Now I just have to decide whether to send it anyway (she enjoyed it) or keep it for myself; it *is* something I think I‘d like to read. 🤔

I was so disappointed by this book. I love The Last Unicorn, and was hopeful with this story. I did not enjoy the way he explored the lore in this novel. Cant say more without spoiling. I say give it a pass.

I'm still mad the couple break up but I did finally finish the book. It's beautifully written and I feel the emotions, but it wasn't the story I hoped for. But it's not the book, it's me.

I peeked ahead at the ending and I am surprised by how much I dislike it. Or not so much the ending itself as the fact that Abe and Joanna are no longer together. I believed in their quiet regard for each other, their comfort with each other, and I find myself outraged that that's taken away. It's just as real and true and important as the harmonica playing and the kayak, damn it. This ending is gonna be a hard sell for me, but I guess we'll see!

After all these years Beagle still writes some of the most beautifully heartrending tales filled with mystery, myth, the intersection between fantasy and reality. This new tale is set in modern times, but with a few characters steeped in such 'otherness' they can't help but fascinate anyone who crosses their path (reader included). Even after I pieced together most of the twists, I still wasn't sure where it would end.

I-read-and-eat I love this cover! 😀 7y

He still has a way with words and descriptions, and twisty stories. I remember The Last Unicorn being both as well when I first read it many years ago. This new tale that twists a bit of myth into a modern story (without giving too much away) is quite a feast to savor as well.

JDHawkins The Last Unicorn is my favorite book of all time. I have got to pick this up. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JDHawkins it's very different, and on the surface a modern story set in this day and age... but with a few side characters that are introduced or passing through the story that are decidedly different, with some 'otherness' to them. I think I have it figured out, but I'm not finished yet...and even if I'm right, I'm not sure how it will go. 7y

Peter S. Beagle has a thing for writing about young, beautiful, mysterious women that everyone falls in love with but must be overtaken by a dark force from another plane of existence. It worked in The Last Unicorn. It didn't work so well here. While his writing is strong, the story dragged, and the mystical world could not save the banality of the real world. Just reread Last Unicorn, that's my advice.

Im not good at reviewing books but I really enjoyed the welcome new book by Peter S Beagle. The book had such a magical atmosphere. The story kept me guessing. A new twist on American Gods by Neil Gaiman but with the beautiful atmosphere only Peter S Beagle can create. Also if you haven't already read them check out The Last Unicorn and, A Fine and Private Place also by Peter S Beagle.

I've been excited to read this one since I discovered by accident he had a new book out. Peter S. Beagle is the author of "The Last Unicorn" and number two on my list of favorite books, "A Fine and Private Place." He blends fantasy with philosophy and has a lyricism to his writing style that is unmatched. I have a feeling this will be another classic. ?

I adore mythic fiction and loved the first half of this book. It makes good use of myth & magical realism but is ultimately grounded in modern life and focused on middle-class relationships.

Unfortunately, the second half took a turn that, while predictable, really disappointed me.

Once upon a time, an elderly couple befriended a young woman who was in need of some help. What follows is more challenging and fantastic than they could ever have imagined. A twist on an old story, you will thrill to recognize the classic elements and find it all the more compelling for its modern setting. Magical, truthful and at times unbearably harsh, this is definitely not happily ever after. - Jax

Received this early from the publisher. 🙌🏻 This was a real treat. Beagle is a masterful fantasy writer. One of those books I will surely visit again. Only flaw was the last fifty or so pages- the ending didn't do the rest of the book justice and left me a bit disappointed.
