Waverley
Waverley | Walter Scott
First published with great success in 1814, Scott's first novel is set in the Scotland of 1745, amidst the Jacobite uprising. Widely considered the first English historical novel, this story of self-discovery follows the young Edward Waverley, an English soldier in the Hanoverian army. He is sent to Scotland, and there he visits both the Lowlands and the Highlands. Waverley meets both lairds and chieftains, and he is soon caught up in both the Jacobite cause and in romantic feelings for the lovely daughter of Baron Bradwardine, Rose, and the passionately political Flora Mac-Ivor, sister to Chieftain Fergus. Full of beautiful description of the natural scenery of Scotland, Scott drew on his childhood memories and talent as a writer to conserve a piece of history and a way of life threatened by civil war.

#Ihavequestions @RaeLovesToRead

1. Tagged, and Gone Girl
2. Twilight series, 50 shades, most horror and romance books

RaeLovesToRead Hehe, I loved Gone Girl 🙈😸 Only made it through 5 pages of Twilight though... 🤣 2y
jenniferw88 @RaeLovesToRead it's interesting - I absolutely HATED Gone Girl, but loved The Girl on the Train! 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I also did not care for Gone Girl or Fifty Shades 🥴 2y

TrishB I hated both Gone Girl and Girl on the Train. I have not read Twilight but had to sit through films( which were ok as they weren‘t close to my heart or anything!) 2y
RaeLovesToRead The only thing I didn't like about Gone Girl was the very ending... very unsatisfying!!! 2y

@ErinSueG #crimesagainstcovers I would quite happily rip pages or create confetti out of this book - too detailed and I couldn't get past the first four chapters - not surprisingly I bailed on this one!

You may like Waverley, Jane, but in my opinion it's as bad as Emma - I did bail on this one and would have bailed on yours too if I hadn't had a module on you!

And a view of the whole of Abbotsford with the other side of the library in-set. Part of the house is now a 5⭐ hotel that has kept the period flavor - looks divine 😍

I spent most of the day at Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott. I've never been a fan of his work but the house is lovely and it was wonderful to see his entire remarkable library in situ as I often have individual items and volumes for consultation at work. Great day out despite the poor weather!
