Those Who Are Loved | Victoria Hislop

The gripping new novel by Sunday Times Number One bestseller Victoria Hislop is set against the backdrop of the German occupation of Greece, the subsequent civil war and a military dictatorship, all of which left deep scars. Athens 1941. After decades of political uncertainty, Greece is polarised between Right- and Left-wing views when the Germans invade. Fifteen-year-old Themis comes from a family divided by these political differences. The Nazi occupation deepens the fault-lines between those she loves just as it reduces Greece to destitution. She watches friends die in the ensuing famine and is moved to commit acts of resistance. In the civil war that follows the end of the occupation, Themis joins the Communist army, where she experiences the extremes of love and hatred and the paradoxes presented by a war in which Greek fights Greek. Eventually imprisoned on the infamous islands of exile, Makronisos and then Trikeri, Themis encounters another prisoner whose life will entwine with her own in ways neither can foresee. And finds she must weigh her principles against her desire to escape and live. As she looks back on her life, Themis realises how tightly the personal and political can become entangled. While some wounds heal, others deepen. This powerful new novel from Number One bestseller Victoria Hislop sheds light on the complexity and trauma of Greece's past and weaves it into the epic tale of an ordinary woman compelled to live an extraordinary life. Mehso-so

The story of a family living through the turmoil in Greece due to WWII and then the political struggle between the right and left should have been right up my street but I felt I was reading a potted history with one dimensional characters thrown in to have right vs left arguments back and forth. The second half felt a bit different and I did get drawn in but overall I‘m 🤷‍♀️. Still, I now know quite a lot about Greece circa 1930 - 1980 😅

Ummm, I liked the first bit a lot more than the second half. The family growing up, the siblings, the lives around them. When Themis is imprisoned I found it began to almost gloss over parts but I know it would have been ridiculously long if not!
Overall it was very readable but not sure I'd be drawn to others By her.

Started this on the night shift... not usually my sort of book but nice and easy prose.
I like the setting and era.
I'm possibly the only person who hasn't read The Island 😉😆😝

Could not go to bed until I‘d finished. This is an awesome, wonderful read. Historical, family saga set in Greece from WWII until modern day. I have to admit I didn‘t know a lot about this particular part of Greek history, it was fantastic and the writing just kept you engrossed.
Loved Themis, what a wonderful character ❤️

Caroline2 Sounds awesome, stacked! 😎 5y
Katerina I love her books as well. I recommend “The Island“.
Hislop has become somewhat of an honorary Greek person. Her books are really popular in Greece too :)

I know very little about Greek history so I found this tale enormously interesting. It‘s really engrossing. Themis is a great character, she has such resilence. What she goes through is mind boggling. This is a wonderful story combining historical fact with fiction. It‘s well paced and kept me eager to read more, quite the page turner in fact. The writing is vivid and gives a good sense of time and place. I almost felt I was there.

The Pigeonhole app has managed to pick some absolutely wonderful books over the time I‘ve subscribed to them (it‘s free!) and this is one of them. We follow Themis and her family from childhood to adulthood , through some of the most turbulent years in Greece‘s history. Dictatorships, World Wars, love, loss, imprisonment, migration. I felt emotionally drained by the end. It‘ll be birthday presents for a few friends this year (my mum included!).
