The Big Book of Science Fiction
The Big Book of Science Fiction | Jeff VanderMeer, Ann VanderMeer
18 posts | 2 read | 2 reading | 17 to read
Quite possibly the GREATEST science-fiction collection of ALL TIMEpast, present, and FUTURE! What if life was never-ending? What if you could change your body to adapt to an alien ecology? What if the Pope was a robot? Spanning galaxies and millennia, this must-have anthology showcases classic contributions from H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, Octavia Butler, and Kurt Vonnegut alongside a century of the eccentrics, rebels, and visionaries who have inspired generations of readers. Within its pages, find beloved worlds of space opera, hard SF, cyberpunk, the new wave, and more. Learn the secret history of science fiction, from literary icons who wrote SF to authors from over 25 countries, some never before translated into English. In THE BIG BOOK OF SCIENCE FICTION, literary power couple Ann and Jeff VanderMeer transport readers from Mars to Mechanopolis, planet Earth to parts unknown. Read the genre that predicted electric cars, travel to the moon, and the modern smart phone. Weve got the worlds if youve got the time. Including: Legendary tales from Isaac Asimov and Ursula LeGuin! An unearthed sci-fi story from W.E.B. DuBois! The first publication of the work of cybernetic visionary David R. Bunch in 20 years! A rare and brilliant novella by Chinese international sensation Liu Cixin! Plus: Aliens! Space battles! Robots! Technology gone wrong! Technology gone right!

Well, here is where I am at for #Bookspin for July 2022. I am so deeply behind with all the chunksters I'm supposed to have read by now (which I haven't) that I'm going with all short stories for July. I've got three fairly large collections I'm working on so there's more than enough here to spin with!

My #BookSpin for May was a story from The Big Book of Science Fiction. If the spinning wheel of book fate keeps this up I'll have this 1160-page book finished in no time! ha! This month's story was Mechanopolis from 1913 by Miguel de Unamuno; translated from Spanish. It's a very short story. A man travels to a world where there are no humans, just machines. ⬇

@TheAromaofBooks

DrexEdit Cut off from all human contact, he loses his sanity. When he finally escapes back to earth he resumes his life devoid of all de-humanizing machines. Yeah, the author's point of view is crystal clear. 3 ⭐

I shall pick my #DoubleSpin short story from this book of Latin American stories I just happen to have checked out from the library. Can't imagine I won't find a good story to read here!

TheAromaofBooks Short story collections can be so hit or miss, so it's kind of fun to read them in snippets instead of all at one go. 2y

Author Sandra Boynton would like to remind us all that today is Science Fiction Day.

I think this will require reading the next story in The Big Book of Science Fiction this evening! 😄

Pickpick

The Triumph of Mechanics is a creepy story about mechanical rabbits that take over a town just in sheer numbers. Written by Karl Hans Strobl before he became a Nazi propaganda writer.

This is my #doublespin #bookspin for November!

Getting ready for my library's adult story time, this month featuring some classic women SF writers.

"The women say that you look very mannish."

"Mannish?" said I. "What do they mean by that?"

"They mean that you are shy and timid like men."

From Bengali writer Rokheya Shekhawat Hossain's excerpt in the Vandermeer's Big Book of SF - a feminist utopian short story called "Sultana's Dream."

So I wanted to read Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang and I could only get it in this giant book of scifi stories. I've been seeing a movie trailer with Amy Adams in it and found out it is based on this story. Movie looks good. Hopefully the story is too.

A post on Tumblr (same name as here) got me thinking - what do you look for in an anthology of more than one author? What turns you away? And what are some of your favorites?

MMenefee I look for a topic. My favorite anthology (right now, that I can remember) is Adaptations From Short Story To Big Screen: 35 Great Stories That Have Inspired Great Films (ed. Harrison). 8y
ReadingOver50 I also go by topic or theme. I love horror anthologies. The horror story seems to lend itself to a shortened format. One of the best is Seize the Night: New Tales of Vampiric Terror edited by Christopher Golden. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I tend to go for fantasy/sci-fi anthologies. I enjoyed this one a lot. 8y
kammartinez I look for a theme I like, then I check who the editors are, then the author list. A mix of familiar and unfamiliar names is always a good thing :). 8y
BookishFeminist I love anthologies of world lit w/diff perspectives, where tropes likely won't be repeated. Also a huge fan of the Best American series, published every year in several volumes, & essay collections. I'm reading this anthology of African short stories now and loving it--so many new to me authors! 8y
