Naked Earth | Eileen Chang
6 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
An NYRB Classics Original Set in the early years of Maos China, Naked Earth is the story of two earnest young people confronting the grim realities of revolutionary change. Liu Chan and Su Nan meet in the countryside after volunteering to assist in the new land reform program. Eager to build a more just society, they are puzzled and shocked by the brutality, barely disguised corruption, and ruthless careerism they discover, but then quickly silenced by the barrage of propaganda and public criticism that is directed at anyone who appears to doubt a righteous cause. Joined together by the secret of their common dismay, they remain in touch when Liu departs to work on a newspaper in Peking, where Su Nan eventually also moves. Something like love begins to grow between thembut then a new round of purges sweeps through the revolutionary ranks. One of the greatest and most loved of modern Chinese writers, Eileen Chang illuminates the dark corners of the human existence with a style of disorienting beauty. Naked Earth, unavailable in English for more than fifty years, is a harrowing tale of perverted ideals, damaged souls, deepest loneliness, and terror.

What a great book! I learned a lot about a time and place I knew nearly nothing about. It addressed a lot of questions I had, that I didn't expect to be answered. It took on some serious issues in a very human way. Add in some lovely writing and a love triangle I didn't find annoying- this book was wonderful.

Oftencantdecide Forgot to point out that I was surprised at how violent this book was (which in retrospect, I probably should have expected). The violence was an interesting contrast with the love story. 7y

One thing that I find really frustrating in books is when the characters' problems could all be solved by a simple conversation. That doesn't stop me from enjoying a book, but it's kind of refreshing to be reading something where the characters have a compelling reason for not talking things out.

I'm really loving this book so far.

#AprilBookShowers- #FirstLineOfCurrentRead
I started reading this book this morning. I'm liking it so far, but I can tell already that I'm going need to look stuff up for historical context and background in general.

RanaElizabeth Oh, damn. This looks fascinating, especially that it was actually written in the early 1950's when it's set. 7y

#SeasonsReadings2016- #WeNeedDiverseBooks- One of my most recent purchases is set in a period I've never read about- the early days of Mao's China.

EvieBee Sounds fascinating! I'm currently reading a little about that. Makes me sad. 7y

My bookoutlet.com box arrived last evening but it was too dark for a decent photo. Here's what I got during the Book Outlet Thanksgiving sale! 12 books for under $50!
-this is my third copy of Pride and Prejudice but the only one residing in the US
- I seem to be buying every Eileen Chang book I can find
- I bought Blackout at a library sale but the copy of All Clear was really sad so I was glad to find this one!
