The Lighthouse
The Lighthouse: An Adam Dalgliesh Mystery | P. D. James
15 posts | 26 read | 12 to read
A subtle and powerful work of contemporary fiction. Combe Island off the Cornish coast has a bloodstained history of piracy and cruelty but now, privately owned, it offers respite to over-stressed men and women in positions of high authority who require privacy and guaranteed security. But the peace of Combe is violated when one of the distinguished visitors is bizarrely murdered. Commander Adam Dalgliesh is called in to solve the mystery quickly and discreetly, but at a difficult time for him and his depleted team. Dalgliesh is uncertain about his future with Emma Lavenham, the woman he loves; Detective Inspector Kate Miskin has her own emotional problems; and the ambitious Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith is worried about working under Kate. Hardly has the team begun to unravel the complicated motives of the suspects than there is a second brutal killing, and the whole investigation is jeopardized when Dalgliesh is faced with a danger more insidious and as potentially fatal as murder. This eagerly awaited successor to the international bestseller The Murder Room displays all the qualities that lovers of P. D. Jamess novels the world over have come to expect: sensitive characterization, an exciting and superbly structured plot and vivid evocation of place. From the Hardcover edition.

I‘m a total fan girl for P. D. James. Even her lesser efforts are satisfyingly complex and detailed. This is the 2nd to last in the Inspector Daglish mysteries. A body is found on a remote Cornish island where a retreat for politico big wigs is established. Was is suicide or murder? If murder, then one of the small pool of people on the island must be the killer.

My final planned book for #DashingDecember & my 1st for #CloakandDaggerChristmas!

merelybookish Congrats! I like your graphic. 😄 I have not read any PD James but I guess I should add it to my mystery TBR. 2y

#JulyJourneys Day 23 #Lighthouse

I have climbed Souter Lighthouse (northeast coast of England) and seen the seals lounging on the rocks below. Recommended to visit.

I wouldn't recommend journeying to the lighthouse in PD James novel though! Fog and murder feature strongly.

With my many years of reading mysteries behind me I have somehow never read P.D. James. This is book 13 in the Adam Dalgliesh series that I picked up at a library book sale so I jumped in with this one. I‘m a sucker for a mystery set on a remote British island so this was right up my alley. Now that I‘ve finally got around to reading her books, I will definitely seek out more.

Not having read it yet, I don‘t know how much of a role the #ocean plays in this book, but it‘s set on the coast. #coolbooks @Linsy

Linsy If it‘s about a lighthouse, the ocean playing a role seems like a pretty solid bet! 6y

1. On a mystery kick right now.
2. Being read to as a child — I still enjoy reading aloud and being read to.
3. I read myself to sleep, and the I read to wake.
4. Horace and the Reeves in Don‘t Skip Out On Me (Vlautin). Such a wonderful novel.

Mehso-so

The author was in her 80s when she wrote this! That alone is impressive/humbling/inspiring. And there is no doubt James is a master of this genre. The plotting and characterization is rock solid. But ... in this outing it seems to me like her powers are on the wane. At points you can tell it is written by someone in their 80s. The attitudes, word choice, dialogue, internal thoughts seem a little dated. And there is a faint whiff of ... cont. 👇👇

readingjedi ...formula about the whole thing - as tried, tested & utterly brilliant as it may be, it is, for me, just too obvious. There are passages of really lovely writing in among the more humdrum flow of the narrative which, while enjoyable, made the whole disjointed, as if a hired hack had written the boring bits and James just turned up for the glory moments. 6y

Ah, found another book with the word lighthouse in the title and a picture of a lighthouse on the cover. PD James, one of my favourite crime authors. 💜

A friend gave me this to read. So easy to read. I really enjoy a murder mystery. Mind you my other half is worried that I have lots of crime novels lined up and said that I might try reading something light☺. HAve read 3 of this series but not it order. I wonder does this matter.

Aaah!! Murder mysteries! I love them. And PD James does such a great job with not just the plot, but also the characterisation of all the players involved. So this one was a mix of the long dead past and the bit so recent past - all coming together in one interesting mystery.

Already regretting coming to bowling night with my boyfriend. Which of these should I choose to keep me preoccupied all night?
