The Broken Hours
The Broken Hours | Jacqueline Baker

In the spring of 1936, horror writer H.P. Lovecraft is broke, living alone in a creaky old house and deathly ill. At the edge of a nervous breakdown, he hires a personal assistant, Arthor Crandle. As the novel opens, Crandle arrives at Lovecrafts home with no knowledge of the writer or his work but is soon drawn into his distinctly unnerving world: the malevolent presence that hovers on the landing; the ever-shining light from Lovecrafts study, invisible from the street; and visions in the night of a white-clad girl in the walled garden. Add to this the arrival of a beautiful woman who may not be exactly what she seems, and Crandle is pulled deeper into the strange world of the horror writer (a man known to Crandle only through letters, signed Ech-Pi), until Crandle begins to unravel the dark secret at its heart. A brilliantly written, compelling and deeply creepy novel, The Broken Hours is an irresistible literary ghost story.

The last year of HP Lovecraft‘s life serves as the backdrop for this tightly written gothic horror story. The protagonist, Arthor Crandle is down on his luck and haunted by his past. He accepts work as a live-in assistant for a reclusive writer who, due to illness, chooses to communicate with Arthor by notes. Baker creates an atmosphere that allows the psychological haunting to unfold slowly and eerily.

Well, at least none of them are laying on my book.
The setup for this story reminds me of Dracula.

A spooky novel that follows a man's descent into madness. As a fan of Lovecraft and gothic literature, I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and full of creepy undertones. I would recommend this to fans of psychological horror. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterB

Next up for #LitsyAtoZ. Arthor Crandle, a man down on his luck and desperate for work, accepts a position as a live-in assistant for a strange, unnamed shut-in who is a writer of bizarre fiction. Arthor begins to investigate his employer's dark family history, and gets pulled into a world cut off from reality, where an unspeakable secret lies waiting. #LetterB
