The Black Cat and Other Stories
The Black Cat and Other Stories | Edgar Allan Poe
" I am not more certain that I breathe than that the assurance of the wrong or error of any action is often the one unconquerable force which impels us, and alone impels us, to its prosecution. " Edgar Allan Poe's obsession with the perverse is seen at its most appalling in these tales, in which killers are betrayed by wail of a cat or the beat of a heart - or perhaps by their own perverseness. And Poe's love of extremis takes us to premature burials, into the maelstrm, and to the bedside of a man mesmerized in the final moments of life - who lives on to declare " I am dead ". This selection includes six of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tales of horror together with his three masterly stories of the unknown at sea : " MS. Found in a Bottle ", " A Descent into the Maelstrm ", and his only novel, " The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket ".

It was this unfathomable longing of the soul to vex itself to offer violence to its own nature to do wrong for the wrong‘s sake

So, when I got home a few moments ago, I went up to @BookBabe 's studio to see how her bookish paintings are coming along, and, lo! who do I spot on the reading chaise but none other than our felonious feline. Oh, #Coale! He wanted a book, and I was happy to oblige. I think he was getting tired of supervising her painting 😊. #catsofLitsy

minkyb A reading chaise is heaven! 7y

@BookishFeminist This was right outside my building when I left work and naturally, I thought of your saga with the inflatables. At least this kitty doesnt look too menacing. Happy Halloween! 🎃📖👻

BookishFeminist Hahahaha oh my god what is this! 😂😂😂 agreed that it's less scary but I don't understand these inflatables! 7y
WoodyWoodson @BookishFeminist at least they waited until Halloween to put it up, but jeez! I still jumped when I saw it. So random and silly! 7y

Mehso-so

Wow, a kind of shocking story. I gasped a few times...and am kind of surprised at the narrator's lack of empathy. Wow, crazy read.

"FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not -- and very surely do I not dream." Poe - The master of unreliable narrators!
